    — "Goku's Final Attack! Countdown to Planet Namek's Destruction"

Frieza (フリーザ, Furīza; lit. "Freeza") is one of the main Antagonists in the manga Dragon Ball and the anime Dragon Ball Z. He also makes appearances in several Dragon Ball Z movies and Dragon Ball GT. Frieza is a galactic emperor of an unnamed race who runs the Planet trade organization and is feared for his ruthlessness and power. He is the descendant of Chilled, the son of King Cold, the younger brother of Cooler, and the father of Kuriza. His name is a rephrase of 'Freezer'.

Frieza is the catalyst antagonist of the entire franchise, as it is his actions that led to Goku arriving on Earth. He has made several comebacks since his fight with Goku on Namek, including his invasion on Earth

    Appearance[]

    FriezaFirstFormPink-RedScouter

    Frieza in his first form

According to Akira Toriyama, Frieza's design is an amalgamation of what he thought monsters looked like in his childhood. According to the Daizenshuu, Frieza was also inspired by Toriyama's second editor, Yū Kondō.

Frieza is one of the villains in the series who possesses an entire range of transformations, each one being quite different than the others. It is implied by Vegeta and Frieza himself in the series that Frieza's fourth, most powerful form is actually his original form, with the other three being forms that suppress his power in order to conserve it, as well as to keep himself under control. Frieza later confirms this while fighting the main protagonist, Goku. His forms seem to revolve around both western and Japanese concepts of demons.

    Name pun[]

Like his brother and father, Frieza's name is a pun on all things relating to the cold. As both Cooler's and Frieza's names end in a short "a" vowel (rather than the long "ā" which usually signifies "er" in kana spellings on English words), Frieza's name is typically spelled with an "a" at the end (as opposed to "Freezer"). Logic would follow that the character's name should in turn be spelled in a similar fashion (as opposed to "Cooler"). Note that FUNimation Entertainment, the company responsible for Dragon Ball's production and distribution in North America and Australia, chooses to spell the name as Cooler (and Freeza as Frieza). It might also be a pun on him being more composed and serious than his brother, who would ergo be the "cooler" brother.

    Introduction[]

Frieza is introduced in the series as a powerful galactic overlord who is involved in the World Trade Organization in which the Saiyans, the main antagonists prior, were members. He rules a vast empire that has control over what has been said to be over 79 planets up until his death (Vegeta visited Planet Frieza 79 briefly after his defeat on Earth. At the time, Frieza himself was using that planet as a base, but was absent while making his way to Namek. Not all Frieza-dominated worlds, such as Planet Vegeta, were numbered). Frieza creates many armies from the planets that he conquers, though his most utilized race were the Saiyans. Frieza had heard about the legend of the Super Saiyan, a being with unrivaled power and the only single warrior that could pose a threat to him, but dismissed it as simple mythology; however, after several Saiyans emerged with rapidly evolving potential, Frieza began to fear that the legend of the Super Saiyan would indeed come true. Thus, when confronted by Bardock, a Saiyan whose powers were growing, Frieza wiped out the Saiyan race by annihilating Planet Vegeta, the home world of the Saiyan race. After analyzing the Saiyans' battle against the Earth, his actions eventually lead him into conflict with the heroes of the series when he tries to take possession of the wish-granting Dragon Balls on Planet Namek. Though still no one could possibly contend with his power, Frieza's fears were realized when he caused the emergence of the mythical Super Saiyan and was defeated by him in a terrific, planet-shattering engagement. Goku, who had escaped Frieza's attempt to destroy the Saiyans, had become the Super Saiyan, ironically, through Frieza's own evil actions.

    Personality[]

    FriezavsVegeta03

Frieza enraged after Gohan, Jimmy, Kayla and Krillin used the Dragon Balls

At his core, Frieza relishes death and destruction, as he shows in his enjoyment of Planet Vegeta's destruction and Spencer Clan Massacre. He is notable for being one of the most sadistic characters in the series, and often tries to make his enemies suffer before he kills them. Like any of the other villains in Dragon Ball Z, Frieza also has an ego to match his power. He also has a sardonic wit and explains in "Face Off on Namek" that the three things he refuses to tolerate are cowardice, bad haircuts and military insurrection, and is quick to declare that Vegeta possesses all three of these qualities. Despite his cold-heartedness and numerous observations by other characters that he cares about no one but himself, Frieza does make several displays of respect towards his father, King Cold, implying that he is not threatened by family (especially considering it is stated in a Budokai Tenkaichi 3 biography that Cold is in fact stronger than Frieza; his mention of his parents being able to cause pain to his true form, as well as Piccolo's statement of a stronger power being with Frieza during his appearance on Earth before Future Trunks' appearance implies that this may be the case in the main series as well). However, even this respect is not absolute, as even after King Cold is introduced, Frieza continues to dub himself the most powerful being of his time, despite other characters being superior to him in strength, and even his own admission that his father was able to cause him pain in his final form.

He utilizes dark humor at times, such as saying "Long live the King!" shortly after killing King Vegeta, as well as singing "Pop goes the weasel!" after violently murdering Krillin (both are mentioned in the FUNimation dub only, the latter in particular was actually him threatening to kill Goku's son, Gohan and his two friends: Jimmy and Kayla, next.). Frieza is fully aware of his reputation for brutality, and makes no effort to deny it, as evidenced by his introduction to the Namekians.

    FriezaFinalFormVsVegeta

    Frieza mercilessly beats Vegeta

In a narrative sense, this serves as a counter to the simple-natured, peaceful personality of Goku, but whether this was done intentionally is unknown. Though often surprised, Frieza tends to react to situations quite evenly, and is only really driven over the edge once his full power starts to slip away and Super Saiyan Goku takes the upper hand in the final moments of their battle on Namek. Frieza takes full pride in his abilities, and often takes the opportunity to demonstrate them (e.g. not using limbs in some fights, killing enemies slowly, and so on).

Ironically, for all of Frieza's power and arrogance, he sometimes displays a paranoid attitude. He destroyed Planet Vegeta simply because of the growing myth of the existence of a Super Saiyan, though when the idea of one is brought up, he utterly denies believing in one and filled with anger, rage, fear and hatred for the Spencer family members and Johnson family members include James, Mary, Doris, Maria, Haylie, Marcus, Amelia, Shaun, Danielle, Zesmond, Alyson, Nathaniel and Kayla.

It should also be noted that in the Japanese version and English Kai dub, unlike most other primary villains, Frieza uses very polite, eloquent language rather than the more tough-talking style of most of the other villains. Despite these traits, he is quite cold-hearted, almost to the point of being machine-like in nature. He tends to view most problems and situations in an intellectual manner, as opposed to a manner of life or death (largely because his immense power causes him to believe he can easily defeat anyone the old fashioned way if he chooses to). This leads him to underestimate his foes, resulting in his eventual downfall. As a narcissist, he tends to be quite confident both in his abilities and his mind, and reacts violently to criticism. Ultimately, Frieza could be viewed as yet another example of a Machiavellian inspired ruler, with ruthless determination to achieve power.

Frieza is rather narcissistic and reacts violently to criticism. Unlike most other primary antagonists, he actually displays a very calm, civilized and refined demeanor, using very polite, regal, eloquent language rather than the more tough-talking style of most of the other villains. This demeanor was deliberately implemented into Frieza's character in order to highlight the chilling contrast regarding his cruel nature, and also admits that, while he does not do villains who were so unscrupulous as to have a psychological effect on the reader, Frieza did come close to matching that description. Despite these traits, he is quite cold-hearted, almost to the point of being machine-like in nature. He tends to view most problems and situations in an intellectual manner, like an academic or a professor, rather than as a manner of life or death (largely because his immense power causes him to believe he can easily defeat anyone the old fashioned way if he chooses to). Despite being very clever and intelligent, Frieza's sheer power leads him to believe no force in the universe could challenge his authority since he extinguished Planet Vegeta, he typically underestimates his foes, resulting in his eventual downfall.

Following his crushing defeat on Namek, Frieza became obsessed with taking his revenge on Goku and his friends, as he headed to Earth as soon as he received the cybernetic modifications and becoming Mecha Frieza, believing the might his new cybernetic form was enough to challenge even a Super Saiyan. However, he suffered another humiliating defeat at the hands of Future Trunks' Super Saiyan form which resulted in his death by learning about him from Kayla. He may have also lost what little sanity he may have had left, presumably from the strain of nearly being killed by Goku, as shortly after arriving on Earth, Frieza briefly hallucinated Super Saiyan Goku's presence nearby and quaked with fear before entering an intrusive flashback to his narrow survival on Namek, and when deciding to kill Goku's friends and Spencer family one by one as his revenge to Goku and recapture Kayla again, he proceeded to break down into hysterical laughter and briefly babbling incoherently. Despite his belief that his form was superior to that of a Super Saiyan, he nonetheless expressed an immense amount of fear of Future Trunks' Super Saiyan form, even backing away wordlessly when he saw it, though he nonetheless put it aside shortly afterward to fight Future Trunks.

Frieza's haste and inexperience with the form proved to be his downfall as his stamina and power decreased the more he used it, which interestingly was the same problem he had when he used his 100% Final Form during the titanic fight on Planet Namek. Interestingly, this trait of Frieza's is in sharp contrast with his nemesis Goku, who is usually focused on mastering or reducing the strain of his transformations such as the Super Saiyan form and other techniques (like the Kaio-ken), allowing him to use those forms and techniques longer by using his energy and stamina more efficiently instead of relying on its power alone to defeat his enemies quickly as Frieza is often inclined.

This habit is the result of Frieza having never encountered anyone strong enough to perceive as a threat to his rule, before he encountered Goku, thus he never really learned how to properly prepare himself to confront beings stronger than himself, unlike Goku who has fought several opponents stronger than himself. Since this has led to his defeat twice, it shows Frieza's arrogance prevents him from learning from his past errors and is ultimately what prevents him from reaching his true potential. This overconfidence also leads to him not engaging in regular training which explains why he could not control his stamina.

Frieza also revealed that he found Goku's pure and noble character nauseating, to the point it made him want to vomit. Given Frieza's sadistic love of death and destruction, his aversion to all things pure and good is quite fitting and shows that deep down Frieza embraces his pure evil nature and despises all things that are purely good.

Frieza had many races under his thumb in his planetary trade, but none were as prevalent as the Saiyans. Gifted with natural fighting ability, strength and the ability to become stronger after every battle, Saiyans became powerful weapons in Frieza's subjugation of planets. However, these very abilities made them a liability to the paranoid Frieza, afraid that, if left unchecked, the Saiyans could either unite and overwhelm him, or one day provide a warrior to rival Frieza himself. He's also heard everything about the Spencer Clan Massacre were destroyed by Wizard Babidi, Pui Pui, Dabura, Mega Buu and Super Buu from 500 years ago and the legendary ultimate fighter, Princess Kaylah Spencer was the last survivor left from the Spencer World, who's the youngest daughter of Shawn Spencer and Denise Uzumaki, born premature with Autism and Immortality; she was once a shy, quiet, pure-hearted, attractive and tomboyish girl in her childhood early years until she reach her teen years and adulthood years before she become the strongest fighter turns Super Saiyan to defeat her nemesis, Mega Buu and Super Buu to restore the Spencer World before her death at heart virus she was 70 years old and her descendants take her legacy for the peaceful in Spencer World. With the advice of his top henchman Zarbon, Frieza plans to wipe out the Saiyan race and Spencer family. Her also ended up forcing King Vegeta into giving him his son, Vegeta, as part of their continued "cooperation", although King Vegeta secretly intended to betray Frieza before he could ever let him have his son. He's also murdered and wiped out of James Spencer and his friends, family and people after he's angrily fed up with James and Mary's one of his daughters, Maria and Maria's friends for pulling pranks and booty-traps on him, Cui, Zarbon, Dodoria, Ginyu Force, Pui Pui, Appule and Dabura over 5 times before he and his army surprised attack against them after Paragus betrayed them for his offering help Frieza to kill them all and he's decided to execution death of the new royal Spencer family in Spencer World during the next Spencer Clan Massacre.

Hearing the accomplishments of the low-level Saiyan Bardock and acting on his own fears of the Super Saiyan legend, Frieza resolves to eliminate all possible threats. He sends his henchman Dodoria and his elites to assassinate Bardock and his team and also Bardock's wife, while Frieza himself sets a course to the Saiyan homeworld. On his arrival, King Vegeta and his men attempt an uprising both to end Frieza's reign and to rescue Prince Vegeta, but it ended disastrously with the King and his soldiers being slaughtered by Frieza as Zarbon and Dodoria watch.

    FriezaEndOfPlanetVegeta

Frieza preparing to destroy planet Vegeta

As Frieza arrived in the planet's orbit, Frieza suspected that the rest of the Saiyans will attempt to emulate King Vegeta's approach and commit a full-scale uprising, a suspicion confirmed when he was confronted by a charging Bardock, lunging through the fields of Frieza's men, and in defiance of the tyrant, even goes as far as to fire a ki blast at Frieza after giving a heart-felt speech declaring that the Saiyan race is going to stop working for Frieza. The tyrant retaliated by laughing maniacally with insane glee as he prepared a Supernova to annihilate the planet. The attack consumes Bardock and some of his men as it buries itself deep beneath the planet's surface resulting in a massive explosion, eradicating nearly every Saiyan.

"Well Well!! Now that, is beautiful!! See?! Look Dodoria, Zarbon, look at the fireworks!! Aren't they splendid?!?!"
    — Frieza relishing the destruction of Planet Vegeta

After the planet's explosion, a story was fabricated to ensure the loyalty of the few remaining Saiyans Frieza had kept in his employ as a convenience: Vegeta, Raditz and Nappa. According to the myth that was created, the guardian of Planet Vegeta, ashamed at the immorality of the Saiyans, summoned meteors to impact and destroy the planet and the Saiyan race. It is shown in a flashback during the Frieza Saga that Frieza's destruction of the Saiyans was a rumor that Vegeta heard before the events of Dragon Ball Z, although this is a form of retroactive continuity, as Vegeta is shown to be completely unaware of this until Dodoria's confession before his death.

At one point, Frieza destroyed an entire planet and the rebellious race who lived on it with a single gigantic energy ball that he fired from his index finger. Vegeta witnessed this event, which caused him to become scared of Frieza's power and put his plans to assassinate Frieza on a hiatus. At one point prior to the battle on Namek, Frieza witnessed a conflict between Vegeta and the Ginyu Force member Guldo unfolding and blasted Guldo away with a weak energy wave as he wished to speak with Vegeta. Frieza then ordered Vegeta to come with him to conquer a planet that Frieza had taken a liking too.

On his ship, he is told of the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God legends by his subordinate but his subordinate doesn't think the legends could be true. Frieza, however, doesn't think they should be overlooked, so he plans to destroy Planet Vegeta in one month's time since most of the Saiyan's will not arrive until then. He then tells his subordinate to tell the remaining Saiyans that the planet has been destroyed by a meteor so the Saiyans won't suspect him.

After Cui, Dodoria, and Zarbon fall to Vegeta, who had betrayed Frieza to collect the fabled items for his own ends, the Ginyu Force is summoned by Frieza to retrieve the Dragon Balls, capture Kayla (who's Jinchuriki has the glowing Dragon Balls Birthmarks appears on her forehead and the rest of her body, she's human descendant of Kaylah Spencer born with Saiyan Powers, he's tried to order Raditz to kill Shaun and Danielle, and bring Kayla to him was failed from the Vegeta Saga episode) and neutralize the Saiyan rogue so that he can be brought to him. Captain Ginyu did bring Frieza the Dragon Balls, Kayla and her Pokemon cat Kelly while his comrades fought, and he and Frieza attempted to summon the dragon, but had no success, coming to the conclusion that they needed some special password only a Namekian would know. While searching for the secret to unlock the power of the Dragon Balls, Frieza meets Kayla for the first time since he recognized her as the reincarnation of Princess Kaylah, Shaun and Danielle's youngest daughter, Zesmond's younger sister and youngest granddaughter of James and Mary from Spencer World, but he's telling her everything to know about he'll saving her later is that he''ll extracted the Eternal Dragons, Dragon Balls Birthmarks, and her powerful DNA energy from her body and killing her, while Ginyu remains behind to guard the Dragon Balls, imprisoned her and her Pokemon kitty cat in locked cell in his ship, crying in fears and bring Frieza's men up to shape. Frieza finds out that three Namekians are still alive by checking his scouter, so he speeds towards and arrives at Grand Elder Guru's home where he is confronted by Nail, the strongest of the Namekian warriors on the planet. Nail leads Frieza away from Guru, and fights Frieza, only for Frieza to horribly torture Nail, in an attempt to reveal the password of the Dragon Balls (and in the process, causes Guru's death under the strain of Frieza's torture). Frieza then leaves him to die after discovering the fight was a diversion for Dende to reveal the password to Krillin, Jimmy, Kayla, Kelly and Gohan as they take the Dragon Balls.

"Of all the thing you might have said. I dare say you've forgotten how vastly terrifying I can be. Let's refresh your memory!"
    — Frieza in "Frieza Closes In! Mighty Porunga, Grant Our Wish!"

Enraged, he follows in pursuit of the heroes only to find that Porunga, the Namekian Dragon is gone due to Guru's death and Kayla's glowing Namekian Dragon Balls Birthmarks disappears. He confronts Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, Jimmy, Kayla, Kelly and Dende after Guru had passed away. He then faces off with a much more powerful Vegeta, who is now capable of possibly holding his own for a bit against Frieza's strength.

After Frieza uses the Death Storm attack, he takes his time to decide who should die first, and chooses Krillin. He injures Krillin by impaling him and torturing him, then throwing him into the Namekian sea, taunting Gohan with his friend's limp body. Gohan responds in an incredible fury and proceeds to pound Frieza with punches, kicks and a barrage of ki blasts. Frieza then proceeds to pummel him, Jimmy and Kayla as a response, as he's begins taunts and tortured Gohan, Jimmy and Kayla on the ground by strangle Jimmy with his tail, severe beatings on the wounded Kayla into falling into unconscious, crushed on Gohan's head and just before he can finish him and his friends off, Krillin, healed by Dende, shoots a Destructo Disk at his tail, chopping the tip of it off. Frieza chases Krillin in a diversion and returns to the others when Frieza decides to finish them off. Fortunately, Piccolo joins the battle - only slightly lesser in abilities to Frieza, because of his fusion with Nail.

Frieza, eager to demonstrate even more of his power to Piccolo, again transformed, unlocking more of his power. Piccolo tries to outrun Frieza, but Frieza's speed was too much for Piccolo. Frieza then brutally attacks Piccolo with his Crazy Finger Beam. Gohan again gets angry, and fires the Full Power Masenko, which Frieza struggles with, but eventually deflects back. Piccolo protects Gohan by firing a blast at it, deflecting it away. Frieza notes Gohan's growing power, and notices he is a Saiyan, Kayla is Kaylah Spencer's human descendant, but doubts Vegeta is his father (he still believes that only Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta escaped Planet Vegeta's destruction), and finally he unveils his true form, stressing that he intended to give his foes the "pleasure" of observing it before they died; in the anime, he promises to show them "a terror greater than hell."

"It would be a relatively simple matter to obliterate you all in my current form, but rather than do that, it will be far more satisfying to leave you with one final vision more terrifying than Death! Consider this my parting gift to you! A nightmare beyond even the horrors of hell! Witness my true, ultimate form!!!"

In his new form, Frieza first killed Dende, who had found out had been healing the heroes when he saw Dende healing Piccolo and Vegeta just before transforming into his final form. Frieza grabbed Kayla behind hostage in front of her friends and Jimmy save her. Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan attack Frieza, but Frieza easily dodges their flurry of kicks and punches. After receiving another Zenkai at his request, Vegeta announced himself as a Super Saiyan and fought Frieza, attempting to hit Frieza with an intense flurry of punches, however, Frieza's speed is still far too much for Vegeta to handle, leaving Vegeta in a quiet state of fear. Vegeta, with all his power, fires a Final Burst Cannon at Frieza directly, but the tyrant was still far his superior and easily kicked the beam away. After Vegeta lost his hope, Frieza proceeded to punish him. Frieza tortured Vegeta by repeatedly punching Vegeta's spine while strangling him with his tail. As Piccolo, Krillin, Jimmy, Kayla, Kelly and Gohan watch in horror, Frieza, in a sadistic manner, reminds them that they can assist Vegeta if they want to. Just as Frieza was about to slay Vegeta, the healed Goku arrives on the battlefield, ready to fight Frieza. Vegeta, believing that Goku had finally become a full-fledged Super Saiyan, taunts Frieza, even though he is too badly beaten to even stand. Frieza, proud of his past accomplishments, smirks before sending his Death Beam through the Saiyan Prince's heart. Teetering on the brink of death, Vegeta is able to tell the newly-healed Goku the real truth of Frieza's genocide of the Saiyan race and Spencer Family, imploring him to take revenge on behalf for all Saiyans.

"Come now. I can't have you giving up after such a glancing blow. No, I'm afraid your torment is only just beginning. There are so many horrors I have yet to show you."
    — Frieza taunting Vegeta in "The Moment of Truth Approaches! Goku Back in Action!"

As Vegeta finishes his plea to Goku, he finally dies from his injury. Goku, saddened by Vegeta's death, buries him and vows to finish Frieza. Goku and Frieza then spar, with Frieza realizing that his opponent is the son of the Saiyan that gave him such trouble years before and Gine. Goku and Frieza are an even match for a while (with the latter even admitting that Goku is the first person other than his parents to cause him pain in his true form), until Frieza determines and states that with 50%, he could easily defeat Goku, with Goku believing this is a bluff. Frieza then increases his power to 50% of his maximum, knows Goku's parents and easily beats Goku, with Goku completely unable to keep up. Goku attempts to use his Kaio-ken x10 during this battle, but Frieza stills beats him using half of his maximum power. Goku then goes desperate and attempts to use a Kaio-ken x20 and a Kamehameha attack, but to no significant avail (the best he could do was slightly char Frieza's hands), as Frieza easily diffuses the blast with 50% of his power. However, he does become alarmingly aware of his opponent's remarkable abilities.

    Friezas-final-transformation-clip-2

Frieza in his third form prepares his final transformation

It should be noted that in the English dub, Frieza states that he had only been fighting at 1% of his full power. Also, no reference is made in this dub to Frieza not using even a third of his power while battling Goku with x10 Kaio-ken. After taking another beating, a severely battered Goku attempts to create a giant Spirit Bomb by calling on the energies of Namek's solar system as a final resort, as Namek did not have enough life on the planet to make the Spirit Bomb powerful. Piccolo is able to distract the tyrant long enough, kicking him into the ocean, and Goku is eventually able to heavily wound Frieza using the Large Spirit Bomb.

"So the little pests decide to intervene from the sidelines. They just won't rest until I have been pushed to the very limits of my patience. YOU MEDDLING BRATS! I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY SUFFERING THE SAME FATE AS THIS PLANET!!!"

With everyone believing the warlord to be dead, the heroes take the time to relax, until Krillin noticed that Frieza had emerged from the blast's crater, retaliating by mortally wounding Piccolo with a Death Beam (in the manga, Frieza intentionally fired at Piccolo, while in the anime, Frieza fired at Goku and then Piccolo pushed him out of the way and took the blast instead). Frieza then used his telekinetic powers to make Krillin fly into the air and, despite Goku's pleas, he murders Krillin (in a way similar to how Vegeta killed Cui). Already bordering on the edge of his rage, Goku was pushed over the edge, his rage exploding, causing Frieza to inadvertently create what he had always feared: a Super Saiyan.

    FriezaElbowsGoku

Frieza elbows Goku using 50% of his power

In the ensuing battle, Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza trade blows, but as the fight progresses, Frieza's 50% power clearly proves to be less than adequate against the Super Saiyan; even his Death Beams at that level have little effect on the newly empowered Saiyan. In frustration, Frieza sends a Death Ball into the core of the planet, starting a chain reaction that would destroy Namek in five minutes (revealing immediately afterwards that he held back too much of his power for the Death Ball to be a complete success). Frieza unleashes 70% and then 100% of his power, which Goku requested, wanting to fight him using all his strength. At this point, Frieza launches a terrific assault against Super Saiyan Goku, who had not expected Frieza's power to be as high as it is.

    FriezaAfterSpiritBomb

    Frieza survives Goku's Spirit Bomb

However, Super Saiyan Goku realizes that after sustaining so much damage in his 50% state, Frieza's body would no longer be able to handle his 100% power for very long. Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza face off and eventually, after a very long battle, Super Saiyan Goku gets the battle under his control, delivering a final momentous blow to the tyrant that symbolically ends Frieza's reign. Seeing Frieza's power slipping fast now, Super Saiyan Goku decides to call off the fight, claiming it would be pointless to continue, as Frieza is losing strength rapidly and Super Saiyan Goku had already humbled the tyrant. He also mentioned that he was holding back ever since Frieza achieved 100% to see what the form was capable of. Humiliated, Frieza refuses to relent, attacking Super Saiyan Goku with two of his own more powerful versions of the Chasing Destructo Disk. As Super Saiyan Goku dodges the attacks, Frieza ironically becomes distracted long enough to be bifurcated by his own attack.

Overcome with anger, Super Saiyan Goku fires an Angry Kamehameha that consumes both Frieza and his attack and ravages what remains of him in the process.

Mecha Frieza inside his father's spaceship

Unbeknownst to Goku and everyone else, Frieza was not killed on Namek. Frieza's shredded body floated in the planet's debris, kept company only by his thoughts of how the universe's conqueror had been thoroughly beaten by a lowly Saiyan. His father King Cold had crews search the area, not believing his son to have been destroyed by something as insignificant as the explosion of a planet. What could be found of Frieza was salvaged, and reconstructed with cybernetic enhancements, leaving him scarred and bitter. Knowing he was stronger than ever before - Frieza's first thought upon rehabilitation is revenge on those who defeated him on Namek.

Frieza beats Goku to Earth (despite his ill intentions towards Earth and all who lived there, Frieza notes It's a good planet on first viewing) and orders his henchmen to find and slaughter its inhabitants and recapture Kayla and Kelly again, with Frieza keen on killing his enemy's friends himself. However, his army is torn apart by a mysterious youth. Frieza dismisses his challenger as an insolent child, and pays him almost no heed until the boy reveals himself as another Super Saiyan. Even then, Frieza initially dismisses the boy's claim as a bluff and laughs it off, only to express shock when the boy proves his claim valid by transforming right in front of him and his father.

"Not that you merit the attention, but I am going to kill you myself. You should feel honored."
    — Frieza boasting to Future Trunks in "I Will Defeat Frieza! Another Super Saiyan"

    Freezadies

Mecha Frieza is slain by Super Saiyan Future Trunks

Dumbstruck, Frieza makes several different efforts to kill the youth, such as energy blasts, each of which is parried easily (this occurs only in the anime while the youth wasted no time and killed Frieza after a single attack in the manga. Also, Gohan implies that Frieza was holding back 50% of his power in the manga whereas the anime has Frieza going all out). He then plays his trump card in the form of a Death Ball ten times the size of the one that destroyed Planet Namek (this attack is called Supernova in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3). Even this is nonchalantly brushed away, until a mortified Frieza causes it to detonate with another shot of ki. Thinking him dead, both father and son are stunned when the youth fires a Burning Attack out of nowhere. Fuming, Frieza becomes oblivious to his opponent's position, and is surprised and sliced in half by the Saiyan youth before being cut to pieces and vaporized in an effortless blast. King Cold met the same fate, with the youth obliterating him with the God Breaker when the tyrant tried to attack him. His cells were collected by Dr. Gero's remote tracking device and used to create Cell, who notably gained Frieza's Death Beam.

In the alternate future timelines of Future Trunks and Cell, it is implied that Future Goku used Instant Transmission to teleport to Earth and kill Frieza and his father King Cold instead of Trunks.

King Cold and Frieza in Hell

After his death, Frieza makes numerous cameo appearances throughout the remainder of the series from Hell. His first (and most major) role was teaming up with Cell and causing trouble in Hell, along with King Cold and the dead members of the Ginyu Force.[1] Frieza and King Cold were the only two villains in this scene to not be thrown onto the Mountain of Needles by Pikkon; Pikkon knocked Frieza out with a single punch to the face after elbowing King Cold in the stomach. Then all seven were locked up in a prison cell. This was one of the rare times we see Frieza and Cell (two of the three main villains of the show) talking to each other about Kaylah's death and her descendants take her legacy and everything from the beginning.

Frieza also appeared observing Goku's fight with Kid Buu alongside other defeated villains from the series. He even states "I could have done the same thing if I hadn't lost both my legs!" When Frieza saw Goku winning against Kid Buu via the Spirit Bomb, he remarks "Why am I not surprised?"

Frieza and Cell appear in Hell

In Dragon Ball GT, he teams up with Cell to act as a distraction for Goku while a horde of villains from the Z Fighters' past escape Hell. Frieza traps Goku in the next world, but even allied with Perfect Cell, he is eventually defeated and remains in Hell.

They work together very well in fighting Goku, almost to the point where they were already on the same page long before Dr. Myuu put his plot in motion. Perhaps their shared hatred for Goku and Shaun, as well as the fact that Cell (having Frieza's cells in his body) knew what made Frieza tick, caused them to almost form a friendship of sorts, thanks to Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu's portal.

Even when Frieza and Cell combine their forces to combat Goku, they both fall under Goku's might, with each of their most significant attacks failing after another. Eventually, after much bickering, Cell and Frieza use their newly made combination technique, the Hell's Buster, to launch Goku downwards into the darker realms of Hell where their opponent has to endure the Terrible Torture Tour. Frieza and Cell come to see Goku frozen after the final stage of the tour, but due to Goku being alive, his living energy heats the ice encasing his body. He then uses the snow machine of the Torture Tour to freeze Cell and Frieza, finally defeating them. Frieza was last seen with Cell being arrested by the ogres.

    Shadow Dragon Saga[]

Frieza briefly appears in the first episode of the Saga, when its shown the wishes made to Shenron that brought the Shadow Dragons to life, as Syn Shenron, the saga's main antagonist, was born from the wish made by Mr. Popo to revive everyone on Namek that was killed at the hands of Frieza and his soldiers. Later, Frieza appears in the flashbacks of the final episode that shows him killing Krillin and then Goku becoming a Super Saiyan for the first time at their battle on Namek.

    Power level[]

    FriezaCellVsGoku

Frieza in his Final Form in GT

Frieza's power level in his first form is stated to be 530,000. When he transforms into his second form, his power jumps to "over 1,000,000." In the series, when transforming into his second form, he continues to power up as he fights, only to transform again when outmatched by Piccolo. His power level in his third form is not stated in the anime/manga, and his final form has a power level of 120,000,000 at 100% of full power according to the Daizenshuu 7. At 50% power (around 60,000,000), Frieza is able to cope with Goku's Kaio-ken x10, but a Kaio-ken x20 gives him trouble (Goku's 3,000,000 x 20=60,000,000 which roughly equals Frieza's 50%). In the anime, at 100% power, Frieza is able to battle nearly evenly against Super Saiyan Goku, and even takes a slight advantage. However, because of the power output, his 100% power slowly drains, leading to his defeat.

In the RPG game Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Freeza, his power level is 20,000 in his first form, 30,000 in his second form, 40,000 in his third form, and 50,000 in his final form.

The RPG game Dragon Ball Z: Legend of the Super Saiyan provides different power levels for Frieza. In his first form, Frieza is at a maximum of 530,000. In his second stage, he is stated to be at 1,000,000, and in his third form, his power is 1,550,000. Once reaching his final form, Frieza's power level raises to 1,700,000, and 3,000,000 at 100% power.

In Dragon Ball Z: Goku Gekitōden, his power level is 250,000 in his first form, 530,000 in his second form, 1,100,000 in his third form, 2,500,000 in his final form, and 5,000,000 at 100% power.

In the video game Dragon Ball Z: Sagas, his power level during his final battle with Goku is stated to be 12,000,000. This could be derived from the error in an early translation of the Daizenshuu, where it was stated to be 12,000,000 instead of the correct 120,000,000.

    Techniques and Special Abilities[]

    • Flight – The ability of flight through the manipulation of ki.
    • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
    • Eye Laser – Precise laser-like beam shot from the eyes. Mild potency, but fast and able to nullify lesser attacks and small projectiles, as well as destroy weaker opponents and obstacles. It was used by Frieza to enter the hut of the Namekian Grand Elder, Guru, while seeking the Dragon Balls, in battle with Goku, and against King Vegeta's Elite Saiyan army who would try to save Prince Vegeta from Frieza (shortly before he destroyed Planet Vegeta and just after he killed King Vegeta with one blow).
    FriezaEyeLaser

Frieza using Eye Lasers to destroy Guru's house

    • Death Beam – Also known as Frieza Beam, this is Frieza's favored killing technique. He extends his right arm and fires a small, bullet-like beam of ki from his index finger. It is able to be fired very quickly while maintaining precise aim. It can vary from either an explosion or piercing attack; killing Dende and Vegeta, respectively in this fashion, and also heavily wounds Piccolo. Called Death Beam in the U.S. releases of recent Dragon Ball Z video games. His third form uses a variant of this attack called Crazy Finger Beam where he fires continuous Death Beams all at once. This attack was used on Piccolo during the Frieza Saga.
      • Barrage Death Beam – A rapid-fire version of the Death Beam.
    • Death Comet – A technique used by Frieza during Namek Saga. When Frieza is unable to control his anger at the fact that Vegeta stole his Dragon Balls, he starts firing massive spheres of energy that demolish the Namekian countryside.
    • Whirlwind Blow – Frieza used this attack against three Nameks by lightly blowing, which produced strong winds that formed a tornado. Since he was seen to only use this once in his weakest form, it may hint he only uses it on feeble opponents.
    • Punishing Rush – This is a rush attack used by Frieza in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Part of this attack was used in Frieza's fight with Nail in the Frieza Saga. Frieza uses a technique very similar, called Meteor Crash, in the Budokai video game series (not to be confused with Goku's Meteor Crash).
    Dragonball 17548

    Frieza charging a Death Beam

    • Death Ball – An attack used by Frieza. A spark of ki lights on the index finger, and once enough energy is gathered this spark may grow to the size of a small moon. When ready, this "Death Ball" is thrown towards the target. Typically this attack is used to destroy planets or as a last-ditch effort to kill an opponent.
      • Supernova – A more powerful version of the Death Ball used by both Frieza and his brother Cooler. Used by Frieza when he destroyed Planet Vegeta and the second time against Future Trunks. The name of the technique comes from the Budokai Tenkaichi video game series.
      • Destroy The Planet! – A variation of the Death Ball Frieza used in an attempt to destroy Planet Namek following Goku's transformation to Super Saiyan. However, he held back too much power, resulting in the planet being nearly destroyed. The name of the technique comes from Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
      • Barrage Death Ball – A rapid-fire version of the Death Ball used by Frieza in his final form.
      • 100% Death Ball – Only used once by Frieza, this enormous pink energy sphere covered with electricity was thrown at Goku who was underwater at the time. Though Goku was able to punch it into space, it still hit another planet, destroying it faster than any planet destruction in DBZ history. This attack was never used in the manga, as Frieza was afraid of being caught in the destruction of Namek.
    • Punishing Blaster – Frieza fires a pink energy wave at the opponent. He used this technique against Piccolo (who had merged with Nail) in his 2nd form. The name comes from Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, and is his Blast 2 in his 2nd form. It also appears in Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and the Raging Blast series.
    • Death Storm – A variation of the Exploding Wave used by 2nd Form Frieza. Its name comes from the Budokai Tenkaichi video games. Also used in Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Freeza and Dragon Ball Z: Legend of the Super Saiyan.

    • HAIL Frieza – Frieza impales the opponent with his horn and tosses them away, only to blast them with a Punishing Blaster. He used this attack to heavily injure Krillin. It is named in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • It's Just Getting Exciting! – A rush attack used by 2nd form Frieza.
    • You Thought That Was It? – A counter attack used by 2nd form Frieza.
    • Punishing Counter – A counter attack used by third form Frieza.
    • Crazy Finger Beam – A weak, but incredibly fast burst which explodes at a location Frieza points to. He uses this ability many times in rapid succession to quickly defeat Piccolo after transforming into this third form.
    • Transformation – This is Frieza's ability to morph himself from a weaker state to a more powerful one. These transformations were originally a containment of his true power, with his actual form being what's commonly referred to as "Final". In all, Frieza demonstrated three transformations and four altered states, overlooking his bulk at 100% power and cyborg augmentation.

    Frieza using his telekinetic ability

    • Kiai – One of the techniques Frieza against Super Saiyan Goku. Also used in the Butōden series.
    • Telekinesis – Frieza can lift or move large objects through the air and blow up objects as big as mountains with only his mind. Used by Frieza in his fight with Goku. Called Psychokinesis in the Budokai Tenkaichi series, where he uses it in his first, final, and 100% Power forms.
      • Psycho Beam (サイコビーム) – One of Frieza psychokinetic techniques in Legend of the Super Saiyan.
      • Psycho Blast – Using his telekinesis, Frieza lifts and throws rocks at his opponent. Used against Goku.
      • Imprisonment Ball – A special attack used on Goku, where he captures his opponent in a ball of energy they cannot break out of. Frieza can manipulate this ball as much as he wants, but it explodes as soon as it touches any surface other than Frieza himself. It is called Psylock Smasher in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2. Also, a similar attack is used in Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3, called I might die this time (perhaps due to that being any victim's thoughts), in which Frieza shoots some rocks at the opponent, and if it hits, uses the Imprisonment Ball, and throws the opponent to the ground.
      • I Won't Let You Escape with Your Life! – Frieza's version of one of Vegeta's deadly attacks, Dirty Fireworks. Frieza shoots a small energy sphere into the opponent, lifts them up with telekinesis, then detonates the opponent by clenching his fist. He has used this technique to kill Krillin.
    • Death Wave – A powerful long blade-like energy beam Frieza creates with two of his fingers and that can slice through anything, as stated by Frieza. Named in the Budokai series, it is also called Energy Cutter and Fissure Slash.
      • Frieza Invisible Blast – A variation of Frieza's Fissure Slice that is present within Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22, where he forms an invisible arcing blast towards his opponent.
    Frieza Kienzan

Frieza preparing a Homing Destructo Disk

    • Flaming Cannon – One of Frieza's many attacks used against Super Saiyan Goku. Frieza fires a large tunnel of flames out the palm of his hand.
    • 50% Power – A rush attack used by Frieza in his final form against Goku. Frieza first teleports behind his opponent and knocks them off their feet with a low kick, and then he catches the opponent by their neck using his tail and brings them closer to himself so that he can elbow them in the ribs.
    • Death Break – A rush attack used by Frieza in his 100% Power form.
    • Nova Strike – An attack where he places a purple sphere of energy around himself and charges at the enemy. He uses this when he reaches 100%. The name of this attack is taken from the Budokai Tenkaichi games.
    • Homing Destructo Disk – Similar to the normal Destructo Disk (most commonly used by Krillin), Frieza's are faster, a different color (purple), and can be controlled remotely. Frieza creates two of these to hound Goku until he's sliced in half by his own attack. It is called Death Saucer in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi video game series.

    Frieza charging a Death Cannon

    • Death Cannon – A more powerful form of Death Beam shot from the palm of the hand. Used by Frieza only in his Final Form.
      • 100% Death Cannon – A full-powered version of the Death Cannon used by Frieza in his 100% Power form.
      • Continuous Death Cannon – Frieza used this attack twice in his 100% Power form during the battle against Super Saiyan Goku.
      • You Will Die By My Hand! – The name given to the blast Frieza used in a final attempt to kill Goku, who countered with the Angry Kamehameha. The name is taken from the Budokai Tenkaichi series. It is Frieza's most powerful form of Death Cannon.
    • Ruthless Blow – An attack used by Mecha Frieza where he impales his opponent with his right hand. Mecha Frieza used this attack to kill one of King Cold's soldiers after all the other soldiers were sliced up by Future Trunks' sword.
    • Death Blaster – A Full Power Energy Wave used by Mecha Frieza against Super Saiyan Trunks.
    • Fly Away – Frieza shoots a large wave of purple energy across the stage left to right. He uses this attack in the video game Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors.

    • Nightmare Blast – From above the opponent, Mecha Frieza shoots energy blasts into a formation different from that of the Death Junk, which strikes the opponent. Also used in Supersonic Warriors 2.
    • Super Explosive Wave – A technique used by Mecha Frieza in the video game Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2.
    • Blind Meteor – A combo move exclusive to Supersonic Warriors 2. Frieza summons Zarbon and Dodoria who blast the opponent. Then, Frieza attacks the opponent and blasts him to the ground to finish him off.
    • Ghost King – A team attack used by Mecha Frieza and King Cold in Supersonic Warriors 2. Mecha Frieza releases a Barrage Death Beam and blasts the opponent to the right, where King Cold punches the opponent down into the ground.
    • Cold Family Power – A team attack where both he and King Cold attack the opponent as a team followed, by King Cold finishing off the opponent with a Dirty Slash and an energy blast. It is King Cold's Ultimate Blast in Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
    • Freeze Storm – A combo move where Cooler and Mecha Frieza create a blizzard and fire it at the opponent. Used Supersonic Warriors 2.

Frieza and Cell perform their new combo attack against Goku

    • Hell Bazooka – A technique that Cell and Frieza developed together while in Hell. Both Cell and Frieza begin to glow, then a yellow ki emits from both of their bodies, which then envelops their opponent, trapping him/her in an inescapable ki orb. Then, both the users throws the orb prison down into the deepest part of Hell, with the prisoner in it. Named Almighty Light Cage in the FUNimation Dub.
    • Absolute Evil – A team attack used by Frieza and Cell in Supersonic Warriors 2.
    • Power Up – One of Frieza's techniques in Legend of the Super Saiyan and the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Frieza Head Smash – One of Frieza's attacks named the Butōden series.
    • Tail Whip – Using his tail, Frieza catches and throws his opponent. Used in the Butōden series.
    • Tail Smash – Frieza hits his opponent with his tail. Used in the Butōden series. Named Super Tail Hit in Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout.
    • Kick Combo – Frieza attacks his opponent only with his feet. Named in Final Bout, it is also Frieza's throw move in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Sly Downward Hit – A diving kick followed by a tail hit. One of his techniques in Final Bout.
    • Frieza Nightmare – Frieza kicks the opponent up in the air, then he kicks and punches him down again, and finally Frieza kicks his opponent in the back when he is down. Used in the Budokai series.
    • Killer Ball – Used in the Budokai series.
    • Evil Dance – A rush attack finished with a Kiai. Used in the Budokai series. In Supersonic Warriors 2, "Evil Dance" is the name of Mecha Frieza's Barrage Death Beam technique.

    • Pump Up – One of his Blast 1 in his first form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Finish Sign – One of his Blast 1 in his second form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Explosive Wave – One of his Blast 1 in his second and third forms in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Hi-Tension – One of his Blast 1 in his third form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Full Power – One of his Blast 1 in his final form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Long awaited-for 100% – One of his Blast 1 in his 100% Power form in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.

    Other traits and abilities[]

    • Frieza has the ability to survive even the most horrifying injuries, a trait which was passed onto Cell. However, while minor injuries seem to be of minor nuisance to him, unlike the other two major villains of the series, he is completely unable to regenerate lost body parts, though his tail stump seems to cope with the bleeding after some time.
    • Frieza can breathe without atmospheric air, enabling him to survive in space, which is why he is not afraid to attack a planet with the Death Ball.
    • In the manga when Final Form Frieza fought against Goku. Piccolo stated that Frieza was so strong he could destroy Planet Namek with "just his strength". This shows us that Frieza is so physically strong that he can destroy planets with his bare hands.
    • He also seems to be unable to sense the ki of other people, like the rest of his minions, who use Scouters as a compromise. It's to be noted, however, that he was able to have a glimpse of a "powerful Saiyan developing and heading to Namek" before the person in question (Goku) actually appeared in front of him.
    • Given enough time, Frieza can lock his senses and his mind onto his opponent to read his/her position at any given moment. He demonstrated this when he began fighting Goku with 50% of his power. He also has strong psychokinetic powers, allowing him to freely levitate objects such as boulders and Dragon Balls so that he does not have to carry them himself.
    • Frieza can extend his tail to great distances and retract afterward.

    Forms and transformations[]

Over time, Frieza's power became so great that his body could not comfortably contain it, and a series of physical transformations were developed to limit his actual strength. While other beings in Dragon Ball Z transform to increase their power, Frieza transforms to control and contain it. His true form is his fourth form, with each of his other transformations meant to restrict his power and conceal it from his enemies. Frieza even says upon transforming to his second state that he has a harder time controlling himself and his power due to the immensity of his current strength. That would suggest that the second and third forms are mere physical augmentations which would allow Frieza to build enough strength to revert to his true form. While changing shape from his "first-form", each alteration builds on the previous.

In all, Frieza demonstrated four transformed states, each with increasing power (some larger than others and each resulting in different physical attributes). Frieza may also use these transformations to purposely decrease his power in order to torment his opponents by giving them a false sense of hope.

    First Form[]

    FriezaFirstFormEp78

Frieza in his first form, without his armor

In his first form, Frieza is a relatively short humanoid being, albeit with a large chestnut-shaped skull with two horns that protrude at near 45 degree angles. He also has a tail with a spiked end, which is relatively thick in width, able to crack the ground when slammed, as well as having three talon-like toes. He has purple sections on his head, shoulders, and abdomen. He wears the same upper-body armor and shorts that many of his subordinates (including the Saiyans) are shown to wear. While traveling, he often gives the appearance of weakness by exclusively using his hoverchair for transportation, leaving his henchmen to do his "dirty work". In this form, Frieza appears to be very small in height, which is shown to be true on the rare occasions that he emerges from his hover-chair. His power level has been stated to be 530,000 by himself in the manga, when he fought Nail and in the Japanese and English versions of Dragon Ball Kai.

    Second Form[]

    Frieza100Million

    Frieza in his second form

His second form is similar in appearance to the first, except much larger, both in height and muscle mass, which can be clearly seen on his chest and stomach areas. Frieza claims to have at least doubled his power in this state, which he has stated is over 1,000,000. He also grows longer horns, which now instead of protruding sideways from his skull curve sharply upwards into near right angles. His armor cannot contain his form and shatters, leaving him with a new, white natural armor covering his chest and shoulders. He has purple sections on his shoulders and abdomen, and orange sections on his forearms and shins. In this form, he somewhat resembles his father King Cold. In the English anime, this form is referred to as his true first form, probably because of his father's form.

    Third Form[]

    FriezaThirdFormEp83

    Frieza in his third form

Frieza's third form is again more brutish, with an extremely elongated skull. His facial features contort and change, with his nose melding into his mouth to form a crude beak. His original horns recede and are now white in color, erupting in pairs along the length of his head. Two pairs of spikes grow out of his back and curve upward somewhat, and the armor on his shoulders fling themselves outward like shoulder pads. He walks and stands with a slight hunch, as if the strain of supporting his head was too much for even Frieza's own body to bear. Frieza stated that no-one had ever seen this form before (which leads us to believe that Frieza, even only in his second form, had been more than enough to trample over any fighter he had come across in the universe). Although powerful, Frieza spent less time in this form than in any other form; spanning only one episode in the uncut version. In the FUNimation Dub, Frieza's voice in this form is essentially the same as his second form with a voice effect added to give him more of an alien-like voice (sounds like his first and second forms together). For the Season 3 Box Set, this effect was removed making him sound exactly the same as his second form. In Dragon Ball Z Kai, however, his voice is much deeper.

    Final Form[]

    Frieza5

    Frieza in his final form

This is, arguably, Frieza's most recognizable form. Drastically differing from his previous transformations, in his final form, Frieza instead regresses, with his former form cracking and shattering like a shell, becoming a short, lizard-like, almost harmless-looking creature; his horns and spikes disappear and his physique becomes streamlined. His skin becomes pure, solid-white with purple sections on his head, shoulders, forearms, abdomen and shins. His arms, legs, and tail are no longer pink. All injuries taken in other forms are healed. This form is the one that Frieza was born in, thus being his "true" form. In fact, according to him, the only ones who have ever given him pain in this form are Goku and "his loving parents". The similarity that this form bears with his first form may hint that, if need be, Frieza can regress to his first form directly, as a means to suppressing his massive power. This is the form that allows him to reach his full potential.

    100% Power Form[]

    Frieza100MaximumPower

Frieza in his 100% Power form

Frieza is also able to attain 100% strength in his final form, greatly increasing his muscle mass. At 100%, this is literally the peak of Frieza's potential and the maximum amount of power his body can output; his muscle mass becomes engorged compared to his previously sleek frame. With absolute strength, he was able to make Super Saiyan Goku struggle during the final battle on Planet Namek. However, due to his prior damage and the strain on his body, he was not able to fight at maximum capacity for long, slowly weakening. Goku also said he was holding back to test the limits of Frieza's full power.

    Mecha Frieza[]

    FriezaFinalFormRobotNV

    Frieza in his synthetic state

Mecha Frieza (メカフリーザ) is Frieza rebuilt with cybernetic enhancements by scientists under the order of King Cold after what remained of the still-living Frieza was salvaged after being physically ruined while caught in Planet Namek's explosion after his defeat. The whole of the lower half of his body and right side of his face was replaced with scarring and metal accouterments covering what little was left of his organic self. These enhancements allowed him to exceed the limits imposed by his fully organic form, though by how much or in what way is unknown. In the original manga, Gohan mentioned that he was nowhere near the power he displayed against Goku, but Vegeta said he was much stronger than before. In the PS2 game Super Dragon Ball Z, a new design for Mecha Frieza (called Cyborg Frieza in-game) was created by Akira Toriyama which had a rocket launcher mounted on his shoulder. In the FUNimation Remastered Box Sets, as well as the English dubbed version of Dragon Ball Kai, this form has a slight mechanical sound to his voice.

Frieza appears in this form in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2. In the story mode, he and Cell are revived and turned into Majins by Babidi, and are once again beaten by Goku and the other Z Fighters. When Majin Buu kills Babidi, Frieza and Cell turn back to their old selves and do not remember anything of being controlled by Babidi. After that they are beaten again and go back to hell. Majin Frieza is also a starter character in Dragon Ball Z 2 V. His appearance while under Babidi's control also differs in that, besides his bearing the Majin mark on his forehead, he also has a facial tic where his right eye is widely opened and his left eye is squinted.

    Equipment[]

    Frieza's Spaceship

    Main article: Frieza's spaceship

The large ship utilized by Frieza and his men for interplanetary travel.

    Frieza's Hoverchair Pod

    Main article: Frieza's hoverchair

A floating, egg-shaped vehicle used by Frieza as a means of transportation. Even though he is extraordinarily powerful and perfectly capable of walking and flying, Frieza (in his first form) seems to prefer using the hover pod as a means of getting around, even inside his own spaceship. The reason for this is unknown, although it is possible he sees it as a status symbol.

    Scouter

    Main article: Scouter

For most of his life, Frieza lacked the ability to naturally sense ki and relied heavily on Scouters to detect ki. Frieza wears a scouter just before attacking Planet Vegeta and takes it off in order to fire his Eye Lasers at King Vegeta's brigade. Frieza's scouter on Namek was a newer model of the same color that was personally given to him by the Ginyu Force. Frieza uses this scouter to find Guru's home. When Frieza personally fights Nail, his scouter measures the lone Namekian's power level (42,000), which somewhat impresses the emperor. After having severely beaten up Nail, Frieza uses his scouter to contact the Ginyu Force, only to find out they are all defeated. While fighting against Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin and Dende, Frieza uses his scouter to measure Vegeta's power, ending the conflict when Frieza's scouter blows up due to Vegeta's power now rivaling his own, apparently, much to Frieza's disbelief. Frieza's newer model appears under the name New Model Scouter (Red) in the Xenoverse series.

    Rocket Launcher

    Main article: Frieza's rocket launcher

A weapon which can launch missiles, grenades, as well as mines. It is mounted on Cyborg Frieza's right shoulder in Super Dragon Ball Z, with his left shoulder holding the ammunitions.

    Other appearances[]

    Movies and specials[]

Frieza appears in the following Dragon Ball Z movies and television specials:

Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku - Dragon Ball Z TV Special #1; released October 17, 1990

Bardock - The Father of Goku[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku

During the TV Special, Frieza mulls over the Saiyans' increasing power until Zarbon advises his master to eliminate Bardock and his team and also his loving wife, Gine after killing James and his family, friends and people on the next Spencer Clan Massacre genocide against the Spencer World and killing King Vegeta and his royal elites to rescue his son, Prince Vegeta inside his spaceship. He then has Dodoria and his soldiers take care of destroying the team. Beforehand, he also humors Vegeta's request for a challenging mission by having him do the most difficult mission with the incentive of him coming back alive. However, when seeing that Bardock's attack pod was en route to Vegeta, he forced Dodoria to be placed under house arrest within his quarters for the failure. He also appeared in a vision of Bardock's, where Goku tells Bardock that it's not too late to avoid becoming like Frieza (it should be noted that this dialogue was exclusive to the dub). In the end, Frieza is challenged by Bardock himself, who survived the onslaught and wants revenge for the death of his crew and beloved wife, Gine. Bardock fires a Riot Javelin at Frieza, who makes a Supernova and cancels out Bardock's attack. Frieza then sends the ball straight into the core of the Planet Vegeta, wiping out almost the entire Saiyan race and many of his own henchmen.

    Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge - DBZ Movie #5; released July 21, 1991

Frieza only appears at the start of the movie, which is identical to the scene towards the end of Bardock - The Father of Goku in which he destroys Planet Vegeta. Cooler watches him from his spaceship and scolds his brother for not seeing the escaping Attack Ball containing baby Goku and also Kid Marcus and baby Shaun, too. After this he is mentioned a few times by various characters. Frieza appears at the beginning of the film along with Bardock, as his brother Cooler watches as he destroys Planet Vegeta and kill Goku's father. He is also frequently mentioned throughout the events proper, mostly in relation to Cooler, as well as his defeat at the hands of Goku.

Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans

Frieza in Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans

Frieza appears in the OVA (and later in the recycling of its animation into the Playdia game) Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans and its remake Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans. In it Frieza was resurrected as a Ghost Warrior, with he and past villains Cooler, Turles, and Lord Slug attacking Goku and his friends. Once it is revealed these are merely Ghost Warriors meant to distract the heroes, the Ghost Warrior Frieza and his allies are easily dealt with.
When the Z Fighters arrive at West City in order to shut down the final Destron Gas Machine, it is discovered that the Frieza, Cooler, Slug, and Turles - revived as Ghost Warriors - are its guardians, after a talk with the Z Fighters the two teams fight. After Turles and Slug are defeated, Frieza and Cooler attack the Z Fighters together, only to also be taken down. The four then attempt to fight the Z Fighters again but are defeated once more until the Destron Gas takes effect, at which point Ghost Frieza and the other Ghost Warriors prepare to finish the Z Fighters of with finger beams, though before they can Bulma appears and shuts down the machine, removing all of the Destron Gas. The Z Fighters then return to full power and Ghost Warrior Frieza and his allies are easily dealt with, however, before they are finished off, Frieza destroys Bunbuku Island killing all of its inhabitants, including Mr. Satan. As the Ghost Warriors disintegrate into Ghost Frieza, Ghost Frieza yells out that the Saiyans should not underestimate their grudge before vanishing.
Later, after the Z Fighters crash on Planet Kuhn, Frieza is brought back again by Hatchiyack, powered up, and sent to stop the Z Fighters from gaining the ring they need to repair their ship. Frieza locates the ring in the planet's ruins before the Z Fighters can and guards it, awaiting their arrival. The Z Fighters arrive and engage Frieza in a battle, eventually defeating him again.

Frieza briefly appears after this, with his grudge energy being the second last to enter Hatchiyack.

In addition to Ghost Frieza who appears as a boss, Psycho Frieza (フリーザサイコ) appears as a regular enemy in Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku; Psycho Frieza's skin is a greenish-colored white, and the gem on his head is dark green.

Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn - DBZ Movie #12; released March 4, 1995

    FriezaInFusionReborn

    Frieza in Fusion Reborn

"A common stranger knows my name? I see that my illustrious reputation precedes me."
    — Frieza to Great Saiyaman before the latter reveals himself as Gohan

When Janemba appears, the dead are revived and they all escape to Earth, under Frieza's command. Frieza confronts Gohan and Videl, with Jimmy and Kayla on their side, and immediately recognizes Gohan as Goku's son and also remembered Jimmy with his nickname "Jimbo" as a five-year-old boy as Gohan's best friend/Kayla's boyfriend and Kayla as Shaun's daughter. Deciding the boy should pay for his father's "sins" along with his two friends against him on Planet Namek years ago, Frieza sends his army of villains (Zarbon, Jeice, Burter, Bojack, Paragus, Cooler, Recoome, Salza, etc.) to attack the two couples, but Gohan flies through them all and silences him by punching Frieza in the stomach and blowing him away with an energy shot to the gut. His terrified minions quickly disperse.

In addition, Frieza's destruction of Planet Vegeta is shown from another point of view in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan (DBZ Movie #8) and both Rasin and Lakasei from The Tree of Might (DBZ Movie #3) believe they would be strong enough to challenge Frieza after eating the fruit of the tree.

Mecha Frieza appears in the credits of Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon being sliced by Future Trunks.

Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan[]

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan

Although Frieza does not have a direct appearance, his destruction of Planet Vegeta is shown in a flashback by Paragus, and was also mentioned twice by him, both relating to his genocide. He also briefly appears in the opening segment, which showed his death at the hands of Future Trunks.

    Manga[]

Frieza makes some appearances in other mangas that are made for special events: Kochikame - Made for the 30th anniversary of Kochikame. Frieza is waiting with Appule on Namek for the three other Dragon Balls to be found when Kankichi Ryotsu comes and says that Frieza cannot park his space ship there. Then Frieza uses a Death Beam to kill Kankichi Ryotsu, but to their surprise he is still alive. Kankichi Ryotsu yells that they have to pay the fine and Frieza attacks with another beam, which also fails to hurt Kankichi Ryotsu. When Kankichi Ryotsu pulls a bazooka out of the air, Appule says that there is no doubt and that Kankichi Ryotsu is a Gag-Manga character. Frieza says he does not care because he is the strongest being in the universe and he fires blasts at Kankichi Ryotsu until he is tired. When even this does not kill Kankichi Ryotsu, Frieza leaves with Appule and says that nothing happened. "Neko Majin Z 3" - August 2003 (Monthly Shōnen Jump, 2003 #9). Frieza does not appear in Neko Majin but he is mentioned by Vegeta who tells Onio and Kuriza (Frieza's son) that he came because Frieza ordered him to. Frieza also appears briefly in the first chapter of the spin-off manga Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, and is seen destroying Planet Vegeta.

Frieza has made numerous appearances in other media. He has appeared in Japanese commercials, notably for the video game Super Gokuden: Kakusei-Hen.

The Japanese nu metal/punk band "Maximum the Hormone" released "「F」" as part of an A-side of a music single on July 9, 2008. The entirety of the song references Frieza and his character's arc, with the single itself rising as high as number two on the Oricon music chart.

In the manga Black Cat, the character Sven Vollfied is often seen using his cell phone. At the top of the phone's wrist strap is a miniature-sized badge of Frieza's head. A caricature of Frieza mixed with a Greys was parodied as a mech pilot in an episode of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. The anime Yakitate!! Japan featured a spoof re-enactment of the fight between Goku and Frieza, with a character clad in a refrigerator representing the latter. The Cartoon Network staple Codename: Kids Next Door had a parody of their own of the climactic fight and the Frieza character, with the Delightful Children From Down the Lane portraying him as a multi-headed monstrosity. Frieza was among other evil imaginary characters who also appear in an episode of South Park entitled "Imaginationland Episode II".

List of characters killed by Frieza[]

    • King Vegeta – Killed by Frieza with a single punch.
    • King Vegeta's Elite Soldiers – Killed by Frieza using his Eye Lasers.
    • Bardock – Killed when Frieza threw his Supernova at Planet Vegeta to blow it up. The Supernova hit him and killed him almost instantly. Several media released after Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku show that Bardock was sent to another time instead of dying.[40][41]
    • Frieza Soldiers – Killed by the Supernova that Frieza uses when he decides to destroy Planet Vegeta, as they were in the way.
    • James Spencer and his family and people – Killed by Frieza using his Death Beam along with his minions: Zarbon and Dodoria and the Ginyu Force wiped out of the Spencer World.
    • Saiyans – Frieza killed the Saiyans with a Supernova, destroying the Planet Vegeta.
    • Namekians – Killed many during the war on Namek.
    • Cargo (manga only) – Killed by Frieza with an energy blast over Moori's shoulder. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls with the rest of the Namekians (Manga only).
    • Orlen – He returned to Frieza after discovering the hidden village Vegeta attacked, but as he had not found out where Vegeta had hidden the Dragon Ball, Frieza killed him with his Eye Laser, threatening to do the same to Zarbon if he did not find Vegeta and make him talk.
    • Namole – While Namole timidly delivered the news that the Ginyu Force were arriving soon, Frieza kills him for showing fear in his presence.
    • Dende – Frieza saw that Dende had the power to heal, so he killed him with a finger beam to eliminate this threat. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls.
    • Vegeta – Frieza mercilessly beat him up, and then when Goku came and Vegeta talked about Frieza being beaten by a Saiyan, Frieza killed the Saiyan Prince with a death beam through the chest just to shut him up. Before dying, he told Goku to destroy Frieza, but was later revived with the Dragon Balls.
    • Krillin – Frieza lifted him into the air using telekinesis and blew him up when he clenched his fist, inducing Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation. He was later revived with the Namekian Dragon Balls. (Note: This was Krillin's second time dying, as he was killed by Tambourine in Dragon Ball).
    • Unnamed Captain – Killed by Frieza, who pierced him with his hand from behind after he retreated from Future Trunks.

    Reception[]

His voice in the English dub is criticized; with that and various features in his character design like his dark colored lips leads to some gender confusion with new fans.[2]

Frieza was mentioned as one of the "most beloved characters" in an article by GamePro.[3] Also on pages D1 and D3 of The Ledger's December 8, 1999 paper, he is one of the reasons that DBZ was listed as a violent show for children back then stating, "In one recent episode, beads of sweat form on the brow of a character named Vegeta, as he is nearly strangled to death by an evil foe named Frieza. In another, Frieza uses the horns on his head to impale a good guy named Krillin through the chest." [4] As well as opinions on his appearance: "Little Gohan is abruptly in the icy metallic grip of one of his arch-nemeses, Frieza, a silvery androgynous giant who looks like a cross between the monster in Alien and Batman's Mr. Freeze." [5] He was also in a "List of the Top 11 Anime Villains" made by That Dude in The Suede (an affiliate of That Guy with the Glasses) in which Frieza is ranked #6.[6]

    Trivia[]

    • In an interview with Akira Toriyama, he revealed that Frieza is a combination of all his worst fears.
    • Frieza's story somewhat mirrors many Greek tragedies, incorporating the message that one cannot escape from his own fate or destiny no matter what one does to avoid it. In fear of the Legend of the Super Saiyan, Frieza destroyed the Saiyans, thus causing the catalyst necessary for a Saiyan to become what he had feared.
    • Frieza is the last major villain who is not artificially created, being actually born naturally (Cell and Majin Buu of Dragon Ball Z and Baby, Super 17 and Omega Shenron in Dragon Ball GT are all artificial constructs or a result of some form of conjuring).
    • Frieza has the largest amount of soldiers working for him, in comparison to all of the other villains in the series (including movies and Dragon Ball GT).
    • The manga and anime never specify exactly how large of a region Frieza oversees, only implying that he controlled at least 79 planets. However, in Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, Cooler states that Frieza ruled the northern quadrant of the universe.
    • Frieza is the final villain in the Dragon Ball manga to have a desire for the Dragon Balls. Though there were also villains in animes and movies who later expressed such desires, as well as villains in video games (Bojack wants them in Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 2, and Babidi wants to use the Dragon Balls to wish for control over Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road).
    • Several mistakes regarding the color of Frieza's neck, armor, and tail are made during the Namek Saga. Occasionally (though not quite so often) Frieza's neck is shown to be pink instead of the same almost-white color of his face, and at other times, the purple spike at the end of his tail is also shown to be pink. In at least one scene in Vegeta Revived, during an explosion, Frieza's armor is white instead of purple.
    • Frieza' third form vaguely resembles a Xenomorph from the Alien film series, particularly in skull structure (in addition, Cooler's final form vaguely resembles a Predator).
    • The fight between Goku and Frieza was the longest in Dragon Ball Z anime, at 19 episodes.
    • Frieza survived one of the most horrific injuries in the series. In his case, it was the loss of his lower half, his right eye, the upper part of his head and his left arm.
    • Frieza had inspired many other villains in the Shonen genre, notably Orochimaru from the Naruto series. During the first Naruto series animation run, Masashi Kishimoto remarked that he hoped Orochimaru would get a voice actor just like Frieza's.
    • Frieza has his tail cut off three times. The first time is when he was in his second form, when Krillin chops it off with a Destructo Disk, though it seems to regenerate when he enters his final form. The second is when he is hit by Goku's Spirit Bomb, as part of it is unable to withstand the blast and thus comes off. The third is when he is cut in half by his own attack, the energy disks slice off his body, arm and tail.
    • In addition, Frieza is chopped in half twice during his lifetime. The first is when he is chopped horizontally in two by his own energy disk. The second is when Future Trunks slices him vertically in half, seconds before chopping him to pieces and completely destroying him. In Dragon Ball GT, Frieza is chopped in half a third time while fighting Goku in Hell and using Krillin's Destructo Disk technique against him, which Goku turns back on him.
    • Since his body was damaged from the Spirit Bomb and Super Saiyan Goku's assault, his 100% full power form only allowed him to fight evenly with Super Saiyan Goku for a few minutes. It is unknown how he would have fared had he not suffered previous damage (though it is somewhat hinted he would have lasted much longer against Goku).
    • Frieza is the second villain to be defeated by Goku and return as a cyborg. The first is Mercenary Tao. Interestingly, both characters suffered grave injuries resulting in receiving cybernetics because of dirty attacks towards Goku (IE, begging for mercy, and then attacking Goku when his guard was let down), and both were given cybernetics by a relative of theirs. They were also both defeated very quickly after reappearing.
    • Of all villains, Frieza has reappeared and been defeated the most; a total of 5 times, or 6 if counting Ghost Warrior Frieza defeated by Future Trunks. He has been defeated twice by Goku, once by Future Trunks, once by Pikkon, and once by Gohan.
    • His appearance in Dragon Ball GT might not count, along with Cell, as they made very short appearances in Hell as minor villains and were outsmarted by Goku.
    • Frieza's voice in the Great Saiyaman Saga, Fusion Reborn, and Dragon Ball GT, sounds like that of his first form even though he is in his final form. This voice is also used for him in all video games where only his 2nd and 3rd forms sound differently from his first form.
    • A Japanese metal band named Maximum the Hormone dedicated a song to Frieza, titled "Freeza".
    • In the Japanese and English versions of Dragon Ball Kai, Frieza's theme song, "Only a Chilling Elegy", is played in the episode "A Nightmare Transformation! Frieza's Power-Level One Million?!", before and during the time when Frieza in his second form impales Krillin with his horn and in the episode "Frieza's Final Transformation! The Ultimate Nightmare Begins!" when Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo fight Frieza in his final form.
