    — "Save the World"

Cell (セル, Seru) is one of the major super-villains of the Dragon Ball manga and the Dragon Ball Z anime, and is the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero, designed to have all the abilities of the greatest fighters to have ever inhabited or visited Earth. The result was a "perfect warrior", possessing numerous genetic traits and special abilities. It should be worth noting that he is the only Red Ribbon Android to not have the Red Ribbon insignia on him at one point or another. It is also worth noting that he is one of the few Androids not directly created by Dr. Gero; the only others are Android 13, Android 14, Android 15, and possibly Android 8. Both Cell and Androids 13, 14 and 15's conceptions involved Dr. Gero's Super Computer.

He is the main antagonist of the Cell Arc, which includes the Imperfect Cell Saga, the Perfect Cell Saga, and the Cell Games Saga.

    Appearance[]

In his Imperfect form, unlike his larval form, Cell walks fully upright on two legs. His facial features have not yet fully developed, and he still retains an orifice-like mouth (which generally obscures four sharp teeth, as revealed in "Silent Warrior"), rather than traditional human-like features seen in later forms. The two sections of his head shoot off in a V-shape resembling a boomerang-shape, rather than nearly straight upward, as in the next two forms. Cell is later shown using the power he absorbed from his victims by having a golden aura with the appearance of wailing souls. Cell has orange color parts near his abdominal area, the back of his head, and even near his groin area. He has two wings which are both emerald green with black spots. He has an emerald green and lime green mix all over his exoskeleton (including head, arms, legs, tail and hands) along with black spots. He has three fingers in the manga, but five fingers and three toes (just as similar as Frieza and King Cold) in the anime. He has a tail like Frieza and King Cold, but has a stinger included at the end of it and his tail comes out from the back not the pelvis. He has black sections as well near his abdominal area, in the middle between the two sections on his head, and even the black part of the opposite side of his tail. He even has azure veins in both of his arms, legs, and even some in the joints in his upper body. His eyes are pink (blue in the manga colored pages) with thin reptilian-like slits.

In his Semi-Perfect form after absorbing Android 17, Cell's wings disappear, and he becomes much more humanoid, he also becomes quite a bit more muscular. His exoskeleton is still emerald green and lime green with black spots from his previous form, but now has black plates on the arms and legs and the black spots on his hands are completely gone. While the nose is not yet fully formed (as it is in the next stage), he now has an actual mouth. The two jutting sections of his head now go straight into the air. In this form, he is at his 2nd largest (next to his Power weighted form) with his height being one and a half times that of Vegeta. His tail is longer and slightly thicker than before, and protrudes from his back, as well as becoming segmented orange and black instead of emerald green and black from his previous form. His voice is deeper than his previous form. The back of his head and the black section on his forehead are now formed together as a ball in between the two sections on his head. His lips are now the color pink, and the black sections above his lips look like a mustache (except it is part of his skin). He now has light blue eyes in this form (a direct result of absorbing Android 17). He even has boot-like feet in this form and metal-like plates all around both of his ankles. He has the same shape of ears as Frieza's, except that his have an orange line that goes down to the chin and to both sides of the ears. His wings regress completely into his back. In his self-destruction form, Semi-Perfect Cell bloats himself, his belly greatly expanding in size. He also claimed that his bloated appearance was unstable, and that a single touch may set him off when dissuading Gohan from trying to stop him.

Cell becomes much more humanoid in his Perfect form after absorbing Android 18, complete with both a fully-formed nose and mouth. His tail is retracted and now used for the creation of Cell Jrs, although it is shown in various media that he can still extend it from his back and absorb other people (as seen in Dragon Ball GTand Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai). Along with his previous two forms, Cell can transform into a Super Saiyan. He is also smaller than in his previous form, being roughly about Piccolo's height, although this still means he towers over characters like Goku and Vegeta. His wings have grown back and now are shaded black. His exoskeleton (including the abdominal area and arms) is no longer emerald green and lime green with black spots from the last two forms, but are now colored light-green with dark green spots and has black plates located on his shoulders and chest, and the plates on his ankles as well as the previously orange section near his groin are now shaded black. He also retains the boot-like feet and the straight jutting sections of his head with the ball-like section between the two sections from his previous form. His skin is now white all in his face, neck and hands, he now has purple lines in both sides of his cheeks, similar to Frieza in his first three forms, and the orange line across his ears and chin is now changed into a yellow color. His eyes are now pink, and his blue veins are now purple. In his Super Perfect state, Cell's appearance is identical to his Perfect form. Nonetheless, his power increases exponentially. His aura crackles with surges of blue electricity, much like a Super Saiyan 2. In the video game Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2, Super Perfect Cell's intense energy flow makes his carapace glow a lighter shade of green.

    Personality[]

    CellConcepts

Some initial sketches of Cell (Daizenshuu 4)

Cell's personality changes drastically throughout the Androids Arc. He is unique among most villains of the series, being that he is quite sophisticated. As his evolution proceeds, he can be observed as having a more patient and calculating approach towards his goals. Because of his genetic composition from other warriors, he is able to psychologically manipulate those warriors and exploit their weaknesses to his advantage.

At first, Cell's desire to complete his evolution by absorbing both Android 17 and Android 18 was what fueled him. Upon reaching his final form, his eagerness to test the limits of his newfound power was what defined his character. Cell is unique among most villains of the series in that he is quite sophisticated. Because of his genetic composition from other warriors, he is able to psychologically manipulate those warriors and exploit their weaknesses to his advantage. He also found the Dragon Balls' reviving ability to be a nuisance, as evidenced by his relief when he learned that the Dragon Balls were rendered inert due to Piccolo and Kami's fusion.

With each transformation, Cell's personality underwent a drastic change. Initially, Cell is completely single-minded in the pursuit of his goals and is very cautious, sneaky, cunning, intelligent, knowledgeable, and calculating in achieving his main goal of perfection. Upon reaching his first transformation, he becomes far more brash and impulsive in his actions, relying less on strategy and more on brute force, often becoming clouded and losing his ability to think rationally when things don't go his way. However, he does retain at least some degree of a strategic mind, as he got the idea to exploit Vegeta's arrogant desire for a challenge to manipulate him into allowing him to absorb 18. Upon reaching perfection, Cell displays a number of traits shared by those whose cells he possesses; Piccolo's cunning, Vegeta's pride, Goku's laid-back disposition, Shaun's self-confidence, Frieza's smugness, and the Saiyan lust for battle. Perhaps Cell's most distinguishable trait in this form is his uninhibited vanity which he shamelessly puts on display by launching the Cell Games, a "tournament" organized for the sole purpose of showing off his new found power. He's already getting have his revenge on Shaun, Danielle and Zesmond for defeating him along with Frieza, Cooler, Bojack and his Galaxy Soldiers, Broly, Super Buu and other villains at the Spencer World's 24th World Martial Arts Tournament, and feeling with hatred and cruel rage towards Shaun Spencer and his family and friends by physically and mentally abusing and torturing Danielle, Jimmy, Videl and Kayla, because he's no love interest and comments of Danielle and her attractive angelic beauty as he's amusing on her pretty woman to toy with her as taking her as his hostage in front of her husband, children and friends in the Cell Games to admit that Danielle is Shaun's weakness. It can also be seen during Cell's confrontation with Gohan when he affirms his "true purpose": the annihilation of anything he considers imperfect, a category in which he places everyone and everything but himself. But when he is outmatched he quickly becomes desperate and makes mistakes. Ironically, the arrogant trait Vegeta displayed to allow Cell to achieve his perfect form was the same trait Cell used to force Gohan to awaken his hidden powers and forcefully abuse Kayla to fight him to see her awesome powerful psychic powers, newly Super Saiyan powers and potential powers like her ancestor Princess Kaylah Spencer did or threatening to kill her mother and Videl, which led to his own downfall, almost directly emulating Vegeta.

In the English manga, Cell is always referred to as an "it", while in the anime (and the Japanese versions of both), he is referred to as "he." He is likely described that way in the English manga to emphasize the fact that he is an artificial being.

As Imperfect Cell, Cell is completely single-minded in the pursuit of his goals to complete his evolution, as he is extremely eager to discover what attaining perfection would feel like. His desire is to absorb both Android 17 and Android 18. Imperfect Cell is very cautious, sneaky, cunning, and calculating; he does not chase after the Androids directly, since he knows he cannot beat them before he absorbs enough human energy. Although obsessed with attaining perfection, Cell was willing to temporarily put aside his plans to absorb 17 and 18 if it meant that he had to deal any possible threat to his plans, as seen how he chose to dispatch Piccolo and attempted to do so with 16 rather than immediately going after 17 and 18.

However, despite his usually cautious and savvy nature, Imperfect Cell could still be seen to be somewhat arrogant, seen by how he openly revealed his plans to Piccolo and Jimmy when under the impression that he had won.

After he achieves his Semi-Perfect form, Cell no longer cares about absorbing other creatures, and becomes obsessed with finding Android 18 to complete his quest for perfection. He also becomes slightly more arrogant and narcissistic because of his power increase, as well as rash and impatient. His arrogance is short-lived though; he is easily outclassed by Vegeta's Super Saiyan Second Grade form. After finding that his Semi-Perfect form is no match for his opponent, Cell convinces Vegeta to allow him to absorb Android 18 to attain the Perfect Form (which he is able to do as he appeals to Vegeta's ego and the natural Saiyan drive to fight stronger opponents, both of which Cell is aware of, as he possesses Vegeta's cells). He is also prone to tantrums when things don't go his way. This is best evidenced when he was unable to find Android 18 and proceeded to blow up several islands in an attempt to force her to come out, not caring if his energy blasts resulted in her destruction if she tried to continue hunker down.

According to his bios in the video games Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3, in his new form, he seems to feel that he is the most powerful living specimen on the planet, and it is suggested that this arrogant attitude may have been influenced by Vegeta's genes (meaning Vegeta's cells may become more prominent while in this form, which seems to be supported by the fact he uses at least two of Vegeta's signature moves in this form, albeit only in the anime: Galick Gun and a modified Big Bang Attack). It may also be due to his absorption of Android 17 and the genes of Frieza, both of whom are very egotistical and intolerant of the idea of anyone being better than themselves. To further support the notion of his superiority, Android 16, who barely survives his brief encounter with this form of Cell, thinks to himself that there should be no one in the universe ready to challenge him at this point (and that it is odd how he is still so obsessed with achieving completion), until this preconception is shattered by Cell's embarrassment against the self-proclaimed "Super Vegeta."

After absorbing No. 18 and becoming perfect, Cell becomes significantly more arrogant in this form, due to the massive increase in power. After attaining the perfect form he had long desired, Cell admitted to Trunks that he had found himself with no other purpose, even killing Goku, Shaun and Danielle, which was Dr. Gero's intended purpose for Cell, did not seem to satisfy him. Thus, he saw his Cell Games as the opportunity to discover a new purpose; to test his new-found power. This could also be attributed by his own vanity.

In this form, Cell gains Frieza's polite mannerisms (though without the snide sarcasm) and ruthlessly sadistic personality, relishing in seeing people terrified, as he admitted to Future Trunks, Jimmy and Kayla when he revealed his intention for the Cell Games. This was further shown in the anime, while waiting for the Cell Games, he chose to terrorize the people of Earth simply for his own amusement. Akira Toriyama himself surmised that the concept behind the Cell Games may have been influenced by King Piccolo's cells which makes sense as King Piccolo also enjoyed terrorizing the people of Earth in a similar manner and both broadcasted their evil intentions on television just to instill fear into Earth's population. Thus he possesses the villainous traits from King Piccolo, Vegeta, and Frieza.

Much like Goku, Cell seems to take on a carefree and laid-back attitude, not losing any form of his composure until he was faced with the prospect of a being stronger than him. Cell has adopted Goku's, as well as Vegeta's, desire to battle strong opponents, which was another purpose of the Cell Games. The fact that prior to facing Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, Cell still chose to hold back his full power, Cell was willing to handicap himself in order to challenge his own limits. Despite this, however, if Cell finds that his opponents were not of a challenge, he would not hesitate to finish the battle quickly or discontinue it. This reflects on how his arrogance, that he saw unchallenging opponents unworthy to fight him. Before fighting Gohan, Cell saw Goku as the only worthy opponent, and displayed excitement when fighting him. Cell even displayed anger when Goku had decided to forfeit his battle against Cell.

    Heshere

    He's Here

After coming back in his Super Perfect form, the huge influx of power causes his already inflated ego to increase dramatically. He becomes notably more deranged, frequently shouting and exhibiting bizarre facial ticks at random intervals (although this may be largely due to his rage over being humiliated by Gohan). In addition, the intro narration for Cell Returns has the narrator referring to Cell as a "demented demon". Cell also became more hotheaded and rash, seen by how he immediately chose to risk destroying the entire solar system simply to defeat Gohan.

After returning from his brush with death, Cell saw himself as true perfection, believing himself to be immortal, as was he was unable to die (save for the unlikely possibility of dying in battle). Oddly, despite having every intention of destroying the planet, he was heard thinking "That's the spirit" when Gohan's challenges Cell to a Kamehameha duel (although this was likely because he wanted the latter to give it his all as a means to prove Cell's own superiority). Even as he was slowly destroyed by Gohan's final attack, Cell could not comprehend why he was defeated, exclaiming that he was perfection itself. When in the throes of defeat, Cell seems to almost lose his sanity. Screaming in rage and confusion as he believes no one can defeat "perfection" (or himself). These traits show that Cell most likely has inherited some of Frieza's mental illness and insanity (also matching his psychotic and sadistic traits).

    Genetic composition and unique abilities[]

    CellGettingOut

    Cell's birth

Cell is composed of cells from Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza, King Cold, and according to the manga title page, a number of other lifeforms (in the FUNimation dub, it is also stated that he has cells from Krillin, Gohan, Kaylah, Shaun, Zesmond, Kayla, Nappa, and Tien Shinhan). He also possesses information on Nappa, Raditz, Gohan, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, Krillin, Yamcha, Kaylah, Shaun, Danielle, Zesmond, Kayla and Future Trunks that was collected by Dr. Gero's remote tracking device and stocked in the Super Computer. Cell is therefore able to use their attacks (ex. Kamehameha, Regeneration etc.). His genetic composition is very much a part of his character. It is also implied that, when using these attacks, he often changes his genetic code so he could match the genetic source of his attacks, as when he was going to fire the Kamehameha at Piccolo, Gohan and Vegeta sensed Goku in the distance, with the former being near Goku at the time. In his Imperfect Form, he is clever and calculating and single-minded about achieving his Perfect Form. In his Semi-Perfect Form, he is a little more arrogant. In his Perfect and Super Perfect forms, he is extremely arrogant, he becomes very smug and he believes that every other living creature is inferior to him, and is shown to be very polite unless he loses his temper. Upon meeting Piccolo and Jimmy for the first time in Gingertown, Cell tells Piccolo that the computer programmed some genetic traits to be more dominant than others. He bears a strong resemblance to Frieza in all of his forms such as his tail and the talon-like feet of his first form, and in his perfect form, his face resembles Frieza's first form. He can also revert back a few stages at will if necessary, as evidenced when Cell reverted back from his Imperfect form to his Larval form in order to use Trunks' Time Machine.

    Imperfect Cell

Cell in his adult form before absorbing the Androids

Cell was designed to have the ability to absorb any biological mass by stabbing his victims with his tail. This process, called "bio-extraction," drains all the organic mass out of the target from the inside out. This attack increases Cell's power, the exact amount depending on the victim's power level. Cell was designed to absorb Dr. Gero's other androids (Android 17 and Android 18) whole, integrating them into his systems. Each time he absorbs an android, he evolves into a more powerful being, however he cannot absorb completely mechanical Androids such as Android 16.

Upon assimilating both Android 17 and Android 18, he gains the ability to asexually reproduce, creating blue, child versions of himself, called "Cell Juniors"

Apparently, he may also be able to change his voice to one of his other forms at will, as Perfect Cell used his Imperfect form's voice during his announcement of the Cell Games in "The Doomsday Broadcast" when explaining that he was the "creature from Nicky Town". He is also able to manipulate his voice, changing it to someone he absorbed. As when Semi-Perfect Cell changed his voiced to 17's to try to convince 18 to merge with the bio-android.

    Biography[]

    Background[]

The version of Cell that plays a large role in Dragon Ball Z hails from an alternate future timeline where he has already evolved to his Imperfect form. Unfortunately for him, neither Future Android 17 nor Future Android 18 are present, having already been taken out by his version of Future Trunks. In order to complete his evolution, Cell kills Future Trunks and steals his Time Machine, going back in time to the date set by Future Trunks in the "standard" timeline when both Androids are still functional, sometime around four years prior to the Androids' arrival. In order to fit into the machine, Cell has to revert to an egg.

Once in the past, he hides underground for four years until he can grow back to his adult, humanoid self. After emerging in his Imperfect form, Cell still fears that he does not have the power he needs to forcibly absorb the Androids. To increase his strength, his first actions are to exterminate several towns, absorbing the human inhabitants within.

    Larval Form[]

    CellLarvalFormEp145

Baby Cell floating in his incubator

Cell's original, larval form floats in Dr. Gero's basement laboratory. In our present timeline, this "Larval Cell" is killed by Future Trunks, Jimmy and Krillin when they discover the basement (which included some blueprints). In Trunks' future, he was still in Trunks' timeline searching for the Androids when Trunks returned from the present timeline. He gets killed by Trunks. In the future timeline, which is another alternate timeline, Cell grows to full-size, cracks out of the machine, turns from a larva into its imperfect form, kills Trunks (in order to steal his Time Machine), reverts to his larval form, and travels back to our present timeline in order to absorb Androids 17 and 18.

    Cocoon Form[]

    Larv

    Cell in his pupal stage

This is Cell's second evolutionary stage. He burrows deep into the ground where he remains for four years, during which time he undergoes a slow, natural evolutionary process as he prepares to change into his imperfect form. Once ready, Cell emerges from the ground to shed his skin. This form's effectiveness in combat (if it has any) is never shown, although it is possible it has some level of defensive capabilities, as being a "perfect" being, it would have some way of defending itself.

    Imperfect Cell (First Form)[]

Imperfect Cell (不完全体セル, Fukanzentai Seru) or 1st form Cell (第ー形態セル Dai Ichi Keitai Seru) is Cell's mature form prior to his absorption of Androids 17 and 18.

    Appearance[]

Unlike his larval form, Cell walks fully upright on two legs. His facial features have not yet fully developed, and he still retains an orifice-like mouth (which generally obscures four teeth, as revealed in "Silent Warrior"), rather than traditional human-like features seen in later forms. The two sections of his head shoot off in different directions, rather than nearly straight up, as in the next two forms. Cell is later shown using the power he absorbed from his victims by having an aura with the appearance of wailing souls. Cell has orange color parts near his abdominal area, the back of his head, and even near his crotch area. He has two wings which are both green with black spots. He has a dark green and light green mix all over his exo-skeleton (including head, arms and legs). He has five fingers and three toes just as similar and Frieza's (three fingers in the manga, but changed in the show like Dodoria and the Namekians), including his tail, but then has a stinger included at the end of his tail. He also has black sections as well near his abdominal area, in the middle between the two sections on his head, and even the black part of opposite side of his tail. He even has blue veins in both of his arms, legs, and even some in the upper body.

Cell confronts the androids and Piccolo

Once in the past, he hides underground for four years until he can grow back to his adult, humanoid self. After emerging in his imperfect form, Cell still fears that he does not have the power he needs to forcibly absorb the Androids. He's meet Kayla for the first time in person, recognize her as Shaun's daughter, as he's noticed her resembles her distant relative, half-Human and half-Saiyan hybrid Princess Kaylah, knowing her parents and big brother from almost 10 years ago at 24th World's Martial Arts Tournament of Spencer World before she was born, knew her name, ready to fight her in front of everybody in Gingertown and toying with her into abuse and torture of several beatings on her, crushing her head to make sure she's crying in tears and falling unconscious and tossed her into the ocean to drowning death. To increase his strength, his first actions are to exterminate several towns, absorbing the human inhabitants within. After completing his feeding on the humans in Ginger Town, Cell is confronted by Piccolo and Jimmy. After a brief struggle where he is beaten around several times, he manages to absorb enough of Piccolo's power to make him stronger and destroys one of Piccolo's arms. Cell (now mistakenly confident in victory) explains who he is to Piccolo and Jimmy with his voice recorder and a drawing and coloring picture of Cell's final perfection form from Kaylah's old sketchbooks. After hearing the story of his creation and his plan, Piccolo reveals that he tricked Cell to give him the time he needed to regenerate his arm and allow him to continue fighting. Future Trunks and Krillin then arrive at the scene. Future Trunks' presence in the past surprises Cell, as he deduces this is another timeline's version of him. He soon learns from Krillin that Goku has not died of his heart disease and is still alive, which makes him excited at the thought of fighting him. Outnumbered, Cell quickly uses the Solar Flare to temporarily blind his opponents and escape. Cell later spots Vegeta and sees the timeline is truly different before he decides he needs a plan to handle the Z Fighters.

    CellImperfectVsPiccoloKami

Imperfect Cell meets Piccolo and Jimmy

Realizing that he is still far below his enemies' power levels, Cell decides to use a hit-and-run strategy at this point, hiding from the Z Fighters while going from town to town (including Nicky Town, Basil Airport, and Chazke Village) absorbing humans and gaining the power he needs to be able to take on the Androids. Piccolo and Tien work on tracking him while Future Trunks, Jimmy and Krillin kill the current (main) timeline's Cell while still in his infancy. At Basil Airport during his feeding, Cell eventually encounters Krillin and Jimmy, and nearly absorbs him and strangle him to death, although he is forced to let him live and let him go when remarking Piccolo and Tien zeroing in on his location.

This becomes a continuing factor as the Z Fighters obtained an aircraft that would allow them to mask their energy and not alert Cell. However, when Yamcha, Tien, Piccolo, Jimmy, Shaun, Zesmond and Krillin arrive in a town, Cell had anticipated their strategy and hid.

Eventually, after absorbing several tens of thousands of humans, Cell detects a large ki; knowing that this has to be Piccolo, he deduces that the only thing that could make him fight so hard would be the Androids. Cell wastes no time and quickly heads toward the area; as he figures, he finds Piccolo and Android 17 engaged in battle.

Cell interrupts the fight and attacks Android 17. At this point, his power has far surpassed Piccolo and Android 17's, seeing Jimmy carrying the unconscious Kayla in his arms, but she's still survived and alive from drowning and fight from him at Gingertown three days ago and without any precautions, he approaches 17. As the monster prepares to absorb the Android, Piccolo attacks him, freeing Android 17 from his grasp. When Android 17 learns what Cell has planned: Cell then watches as Piccolo and Jimmy informs the androids of what he is and what he has planned to do with them, he dismisses the threat, thinking that he is much more powerful than Cell could ever be, and attacks. After knocking away Android 17, Cell fights and easily beats the weakened Piccolo, even managing to shrug off the Namekian's Light Grenade. After blasting a hole through Piccolo's side and tossing him into the sea, Cell is able to attack 17 again.

Cell defeats Android 17 easily and is about to absorb him when Android 16 becomes involved. Android 16 states that according to his calculations, he is just equivalent to Cell in both strength and speed, and portends that he will be the one to kill Cell. After a struggle where it is revealed that Cell is unable to absorb Android 16's energy, 16 throws Cell underground and blasts him using his Hell's Flash.

After a struggle where it is revealed that Cell is unable to absorb 16's energy, 16 has injured Cell, but before he can finish him off.

Android 16 advises 17 and 18 to leave, but 17 is convinced that even if 16 didn't kill Cell, 17 interrupts and remarks that the three of them are unbeatable, it still proved that the three of them were unbeatable, fully sure that together, the whole world will soon be their playground (in Kai, 17 wants revenge on Cell for the beating Cell gave him earlier and decides he will finish Cell).

    Semi-Perfect Cell

Semi-Perfect Cell (半完全体セル, Hankanzentai Seru) or 2nd Form Cell (第二形態セル Dai Ni Keitai Seru) is a form Cell achieved after absorbing Android 17, but before getting to Android 18. It is unknown what form he would take on if he absorbed 18 before 17. This form makes its debut on Dragon Ball Z Episode 152 (137 in the edited version) "Say Goodbye, 17" on August 12, 1992.

    Appearance[]

    Semi-Perfect Cell

In this form, Cell's wings disappear, and he becomes much more humanoid, also becoming bulkier. While the nose is not yet fully formed (as it will be in the next stage), he now has an actual mouth. The two off-shooting sections of his head now go straight into the air, as well. In this form, he is at his 2nd largest (because of Power Weighted Perfect Cell) with his height being more than double that of Vegeta. His tail is longer than before, and protrudes from his back, as well as becoming orange and black. His voice is deeper than his previous form. The back of his head and the black section on his forehead are now formed together as a ball in between the two sections on his head. His lips are now the color pink, and the black sections above his lips look like a mustache (except it is part of his skin). He now has blue eyes in this form. He even has feet like shoes in this form and metal plates all around both of his ankles. He has the same shape of ears as Frieza's, except that his has an orange line that goes down to his chin and to the both sides of his ears.

After he achieved this form, Cell no longer cared about absorbing other creatures, and becomes obsessed with finding Android 18. Aside from his obsession, he also becomes slightly more arrogant and cocky because of his power increase, as well as being rash and impatient. His arrogance was short-lived, though, as he was easily outclassed by Vegeta's Ascended Super Saiyan form. After finding that his Semi-Perfect form is no match for his opponent, Cell convinced Vegeta to allow him to absorb Android 18 to reach his Perfect Form (which he was able to do as he appeals to Vegeta's ego and the natural Saiyan drive to fight stronger opponents, both of which Cell is aware of as he possesses Vegeta's cells).

According to his bios in the video games Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3, in his new form, he seems to feel that he is the most powerful living specimen on the planet, and it is suggested that this arrogant attitude may have been influenced by Vegeta's genes (meaning Vegeta's cells may become more prominent while in this form, which seems to be supported by the fact he uses at least two of Vegeta's signature moves in this form, albeit only in the anime: Galick Gun and Big Bang Attack). It may also be due to his absorption of Android 17 and the genes of Frieza, both of whom were very egotistical and intolerant of the idea of anyone being better than themselves (interestingly, it is only after absorbing the Androids that he begins to use their technique of conjuring barriers, albeit only once after attaining his Perfect form. To further "support" the notion of his superiority, Android 16, who barely survived his brief encounter with this form of Cell, thinks to himself that there should be no one in the universe ready to challenge him at this point (and that it was odd how he was still so obsessed with achieving completion), until this preconception was shattered by Cell's embarrassment against the self-proclaimed "Super Vegeta."

    Semi-Perfect Cell

After Cell's absorption of Android 17, Android 16, knowing that he is now well outmatched, attempts to flee with Android 18, Jimmy and Kayla, but Cell easily intercepts them, thanks to the added speed of Android 17. In a display of his new power, he takes a direct hit from Android 16 without injury and then easily blasts the Android, nearly destroying his head effortlessly and knocking Jimmy on the ground with Android 16. Cell turns to Android 18, but she threatens to self destruct before joining him if he approaches, which will leave him unable to attain his complete form. In an attempt to pacify her, he pretends to be Android 17 by mimicking his voice (a trait probably gained from his absorption) and tells her how wonderful it is to be part of Cell and fulfilling "the great" Dr. Gero's vision. Android 16, still functional but badly damaged, warns her of the ploy, something she already knows since both she and Android 17 despised Dr. Gero, they would never compliment him.

Cell absorbing Android 18 to achieve his Perfect Form

When his plan fails, Cell prepares to attempt to absorb 18 by force regardless, knowing that he is fast enough to prevent her from destroying herself and more than capable of overpowering her and threatened to hurt Kayla again. He is prevented by Tien however, who uses his Neo Tri-Beam attack several times to stall Cell, destroying much of the landscape and nearly killing himself. Though Cell does not take any significant damage from the assault, it manages to hold him at bay long enough for Android 16 and Android 18 alongside with Jimmy and Kayla to make their escape. Though Tien is exhausted right to the point of death (and soon falls unconscious), Cell insults Tien for stalling his plans and decides to kill him anyway as retribution. Before he can fire though, Goku intervenes and teleports to their location using Instant Transmission, meeting Cell for the first time. Shocked to finally meet Goku, Cell greets him as the Saiyan informs Cell that while he is not strong enough yet, Goku informs Cell he will fight him in one day and win.

Cell laughs at this supposed cowardice, before he is amazed by Goku teleporting him and Tien near the sea. He is shocked to discover Piccolo survived his attack and regenerated, as he realized his careless mistake of not properly killing him. Cell, who eagerly wants to fight Goku, states that they will not fight another day, but now, and flies towards him when he grabs Piccolo. Before Cell can make contact, Goku uses Instant Transmission again, carrying an unconscious Tien and a barely alive Piccolo back to safety at Kami's Lookout before Cell's punch lands. Cell is in awe of Goku's ability to teleport, but dismisses it, saying that his priority now is to find 18.

Without anyone to oppose him, Cell continues his search for Android 18. After losing her in a group of islands, he proceeds to destroy the islands, one-by-one, in an attempt to flush the Android out. Having just completed his first year in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta approaches and challenges him. Cell is soon shocked to discover that Vegeta is significantly more powerful than his new body, as the fight is entirely one-sided. Even after powering up to full power, he is unable to injure the Saiyan, who now calls himself "Super Vegeta."

During their fight, Cell becomes incredibly frustrated as he cannot land a hit on the Saiyan Prince, and states if it was not for Vegeta's interference, he knows he would have achieved his perfect form by now and have crushed everyone in his path. Knowing that he is incapable of defeating Vegeta in a physical battle, Cell appeals to Vegeta's ego, stating that if he were in his Perfect body, he would be a much better challenge. Vegeta, wanting a stronger opponent, agrees to Cell's proposition. When Future Trunks refuses to allow it, Cell calls on Vegeta to remove him as an obstacle while he goes after the recently discovered Android 18. Cell charges the Android with Future Trunks (also in his Ascended Super Saiyan form) in hot pursuit, until Vegeta kicks Future Trunks out of the way. Future Trunks retaliates by quickly blasting Vegeta, barely damaging him, but surprising him with the guts to attack his own father nonetheless, and going after Cell again, but Cell is ready and uses the Solar Flare to temporarily blind everyone long enough for him to absorb Android 18. Cell then puts up an impenetrable barrier while he evolves yet again, this time to Perfect Cell.

He later reverts to his semi-perfect state when he is beaten so badly by Super Saiyan 2 Gohan that he is forced to regurgitate Android 18. In filler, Gohan messes around with Cell in this form, scaring him into falling into a hole. Cell eventually gets so desperate, that he bloats up like a balloon and tries to blow himself up in an attempt to destroy the Earth, knowing he is well outmatched. With no other options, Goku instead sacrifices himself by using his Instant Transmission to teleport Cell to King Kai's planet at the last second, where he, Shaun, Danielle, Zesmond, King Kai, Gregory, and Bubbles all die. Unfortunately, Cell's nucleus survives to reconstruct himself into his most powerful state yet, the Super Perfect Form.

    Perfect Cell[]

    CellTheCellGames

    Perfect Cell

Perfect Cell (完全体セル, Kanzentai Seru) is the ultimate form of Cell, which he assumed after absorbing both Androids 17 and 18.

    Appearance[]

Cell becomes much more humanoid in this form, complete with both a fully-formed nose and mouth. His tail is retracted and now used for the creation of Cell Jrs, Jr.'s, although it is shown in various media that he can still extend it from his back and absorb other people (as seen in Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road). Along with his previous two forms, Cell can brandish an aura with the same color as a Super Saiyan. He is also smaller than in his previous form, being only about Piccolo's height. His wings have grown back and now are shaded black. His exoskeleton is colored light-green with black spots and has black sections located on his shoulders, chest, the metal plates on his ankles are now shaded black, and now the orange section near his crotch area are also shaded black. His skin is now white all in his face and hands, he now has purple lines in both sides of his cheeks, similar to Frieza in his first three forms, and the orange line across from his ears and chin are now changed into a yellow color. His eyes are now pink, and his blue veins are now purple.

    Personality[]

Cell becomes significantly more arrogant in this form due to his increase in speed and power, and now only wishes to test his own power and does not truly care for taking over the universe. In this form, Cell gains Frieza's polite mannerisms (though without the snide sarcasm), Piccolo's cunning, Vegeta's self-confidence, Shaun's self-confidence and Goku's laid back nature and love of fighting.

    Biography[]

    CellKicksKuririn

    Cell kicks Krillin

After Cell achieves his goal of becoming perfect, Krillin becomes enraged by Android 18's absorption and immediately attacks Cell, with Trunks assisting. However, Cell continues to admire his new body completely ignoring Krillin and Trunks' assault, while barely registered Krillin and Trunks' hits and takes Krillin's Destructo Disk attack to the neck with the disk breaking on impact, not even flinching. He then "lightly" kicks Krillin away, making Krillin fly across the island, leaving Krillin in a near dead state, kick Jimmy in the face so hard to have a black eye and crushing Kayla with his foot on her head when he's kneeling her into her stomach so much, torturing her and kick her towards next to Jimmy. Vegeta, unimpressed by the display, was eager to resume their battle, which Cell obliged. The tables then turn since their last battle, and now Cell merely toys with Vegeta at the beginning, taking on his attacks without any sign of damage. Vegeta then delivers a powerful kick to Cell's head, with almost all of his energy converted towards the attack, but Cell is not affected in the slightest (his head turns only slightly from the attack), leaving Vegeta in a momentary state of shock and disbelief. When Cell strikes back, the kick he delivers blows Vegeta away, smashing him through several rock formation, after which Cell proceeds to mockingly thank him, outright stating that he would never have been able to reach his Perfect Form were it not for Vegeta's foolishness. Vegeta then challenges Cell to take his next attack head on without dodging it and prepares his ultimate attack, the Final Flash. While Vegeta charges his deadly beam, Cell continues to stand calm and collected, nearly smiling while Android 16 looks in disbelief. Cell however, does become slightly concerned when Vegeta finally fires the attack. Cell nearly takes the full brunt of the attack, vaporizing everything to the right side above his torso. Though Vegeta believes himself to be victorious, Cell proves otherwise; his cells from Frieza allow him to survive and function with virtually any wound and those of Piccolo allowed him to regenerate from the damage instantly. Almost immediately following the attack, Cell regrew the destroyed area and was back to normal. Vegeta now attacked in desperation, firing off dozens of Ki bolts, but Cell simply walked through it and with one swift combination of attacks, incapacitated the Saiyan.

    CellRegenerates

    Cell regenerates

With Vegeta out of the picture, Future Trunks was free to fully power up without worrying about injuring his father's pride. He soon reaches the Ultra Super Saiyan stage. When Cell finally sees Future Trunks' powers, he believes Future Trunks to be stronger than himself, although claims that Trunks still has no chance of winning and explains that the downside of the increased muscle mass in this form drained Trunks' stamina quickly and made him significantly slower as well. This theory proves correct, as Cell easily dodges Trunks' punches and kicks, mocking Trunks while he does so. Vegeta later tells that, unlike what Future Trunks originally thought, he also can fully power up his body, but does not do so because of this ability's weakness and scolds Future Trunks for not realizing the weakness until now.

Cell chided Future Trunks, stating that simple brute force is worthless and quickly demonstrated that he too could increase his muscle size if he desired. At this point, Future Trunks forfeits the match and is willing to allow Cell to kill him, Jimmy and Kayla. Cell considers it, but decides not to after realizing how much more powerful Vegeta and Future Trunks had become in just a few days, and that Goku would be challenging him soon. He instead decided to hold a tournament in ten days, taking all challengers since he saw it would be a very good way to test his new power. He also admits to Future Trunks that he has no interest in conquest, he wants just entertainment, primarily through the fear of others. Cell then leaves the island while Trunks stares in shock and confusion.

    Cell creating the arena

Using telekinesis, Cell spends the next morning creating the arena where he is holding his tournament, the Cell Games, and then interrupts a live news broadcast to inform everyone around the world about the Cell Games. He stated that he would take on as many challengers as there are and, if he is able to go through them all, he will then exterminate all life on the Earth, and enjoy watching people's terrified faces in the process. While at the arena waiting for the day of the competition to arrive, Goku arrived briefly through Instant Transmission to check Cell's power level and they engaged in small talk. This is then followed by an attack by the Earth's army, but this proves hopeless as Cell, with a single gesture, destroys them all with a form of psychokinesis. During the ten day wait, Cell mostly stayed at his ring and trained, sometimes standing perfectly still, meditating in silence. On the day of the Tournament, Mr. Satan, until he's finds out that Mr. Satan is the father of Jimmy and Videl and laughing at Jimmy's nickname, attempts to fight Perfect Cell first, although he is easily knocked away with one flick of Cell's wrist and is disqualified. Throughout the entire tournament, he runs from the media covering the story, claiming that he is suffering from intense stomach pains and calls the techniques in the ring "Tricks or Illusions". Goku and Perfect Cell then begin to battle, although, Cell wishes that Goku was the last opponent on the list, wanting to "save the best for last". In a heated display of power, technique and ability, Goku seems to be able to keep up against the mechanically engineered monster. Perfect Cell pulled out all kinds of tricks, performing various moves such as the Special Beam Cannon and the Kamehameha wave. Cell also learns of Goku's Instant Transmission, which is how he was able to warp like Shawn, Zesmond Spencer, James, Shaun and Zesmond did.

Cell getting ready to fight Goku

Goku and Perfect Cell battled for a while until Perfect Cell grew tired of being confined to the small ring. So Perfect Cell destroyed the ring and made the battle an all-out fight, just to make things more interesting for him, with no rules applied. Goku threw everything he could at Perfect Cell and even tricked Perfect Cell into believing he would destroy the Earth with a Kamehameha wave. Perfect Cell was noticeably afraid as Goku powered up the energy blast, but Goku tricked him by performing Instant Transmission to teleport directly in front of Perfect Cell, and unleashed the blast on him. The entire top half of Perfect Cell was disintegrated. The Z Fighters believing Cell has died, Krillin, Vegeta, Shaun, and Future Trunks know otherwise, seemed content until the remains of Perfect Cell jumped to its feet and regenerated. Goku knew that if he continued, the Earth would be destroyed, or Perfect Cell and himself would die fighting each other. Goku suddenly forfeited the match to Perfect Cell and surrendered. He reasoned that only one person could defeat Perfect Cell. When Goku revealed his son Gohan along with Jimmy and Kayla as his pick to fight, the Z Fighters were furious (noticeably Vegeta and Piccolo) and Perfect Cell was amused, believing the match will be fun, and he will get to make Goku suffer for his idiotic decision by torturing his only son, Mr. Satan's son and Shaun's daughter.

Cell powering up to fight Gohan

It took a while for the battle to commence between Gohan, Jimmy, Kayla and Perfect Cell, and even longer for Gohan, Jimmy and Kayla to get serious. Underestimating his opponent, Cell attacks Gohan directly, making him crash into a rock formation. Cell at first believes the boy to be dead, but Gohan emerges with barely any injury, surprising Cell. As a Full-Power Super Saiyan, he started out somewhat better than Goku, but in the end, his efforts were no good, which noticeably worried the good-sided spectators (except Goku). As the battle continued, Gohan demanded Perfect Cell to stop fighting, and he told him that the power he could harness when he became enraged, is beyond his control, which may lead to devastating results for Cell, would destroy everything. However Cell begins to laugh, as the story does not scare him, this only fueled Perfect Cell's desire to push Gohan to the limit, much to Gohan's horror and taking Danielle hostage. Finally, Android 16 decided to destroy Perfect Cell and himself with the self destruct device in his body. He wrapped his arms around Perfect Cell's torso (similar to how Chiaotzu tried to kill Nappa by self destructing), with the purpose of killing them both. To Android 16's surprise, Krillin informs that the bomb had been removed by Bulma when she re-programmed him earlier during repairs. Cell then gains the upper hand and destroys all of Android 16 but his head, which rolls over the battlefield. Cell even claims that even if the bomb did blow up, he would most likely not be affected too much, despite his fearful look when he found out what Android 16 was intending to do, about to kill Kayla with Frieza's Death Beam attack at her; but Zesmond has sacrificed himself to save his sister by pushing her away and take the technique as he's being hit through his left shoulder, he's still alive, unconscious and hurt so bad and knockout Danielle unconscious laying on the ground next to Kayla. Realising that no physical pain on Gohan's own body will unleash his hidden potential, Cell then creates eight smaller blue versions of himself from his tail and christens them Cell Jrs,. After they are born, Cell orders them to attack the Z Fighters, but not kill them, and begins to wonder if harm on Gohan's friends and father will finally reveal Gohan's power.

Gohan delivers a devastating punch to Cell

Despite their childish appearances and attitudes, the Cell Jr.'s easily clobber the Z Fighters, being close to Perfect Cell's own power. Only Piccolo, Vegeta and Future Trunks in their Super Saiyan 2nd Grade forms manage to hold them off for a while, but eventually, all of them are brutally defeated (even Goku, who was weakened from his fight with Perfect Cell). As Gohan watched these maniacal minions heartlessly beat his friends and father, he became angry, but it was still not enough.

Perfect Cell, noticing Gohan's anger, orders the Cell Jr.'s to kill everyone include Jimmy for real. When Perfect Cell finally noticed to see a glimpse of a little head with pale skin complexion, blue eyes and black hair in pigtails who's almost close to resembles Kayla, in fact, he's still sense her Ki energy until he's finds out that she was Jimmy's younger sister and Mr. Satan's daughter that quickly away somewhere hiding in the large rocks behind Gohan and Kayla were expected there in a whole time for spying on him in the Cell Games.

"And now who do we have here?"
    — Cell smirked laugh after he's going to after Videl in her hiding spot behind Gohan and Kayla

Cell walking over to Videl's hiding spot behind Gohan and Kayla for spies on them and destroy the small jet helicopter with his powerful blast into a many pieces near the mountains from prevent her escape. The one of Cell Juniors appears behind her to poking at her, then Cell Junior grabbed her right arm and tossed Videl out from her hiding spot all over view in front of him, Kayla and Gohan. Cell had grabbed the hiding Videl by the back of her white shirt and then he retracted his arm while still holding her. Kayla was still alive softly moaning waking up towards him as seeing him to holding Videl; tries to getting up on her feet, but she's feeling too exhausted and weaker state during fighting Cell in the second round, angrily telling him to put her down, running and flying charge towards Cell with a kick and Cell took a advantage to kicked Kayla in the stomach so hard to make her falling unconscious again. Cell taunts a begged Jimmy that he will going threatened to hurt his little sister in front of him and their father. Videl continued to kicks and punches Cell's arm to no effect while she screamed constantly for him to let her go. Gohan was seriously shocked by girl's beautiful sudden appearance. Cell cocked back his other arm in preparation for a fatal palm strike at the girl.

"Yes Gohan, just another so-called a innocent girl. But if her death is what sets you off, she's the one who's sneaking around here for the first place, watching us fighting each other during a whole day long and end up to distracted me from unleashed your hidden powers in the real threats, but expect, it won't be next time. After all, she's Jimmy's little sister and Mr. Satan's daughter, it's a shame that I will kill her for real and after Jimmy got beaten up, she's next, then you can just blame yourself for being so stubborn like Kayla from the beginning!"
    — Cell threats to hurt the terrified young Videl for real to see Gohan's hidden powers

At this point, Mr. Satan discovers the head of Android 16, which, surprisingly, can still talk. Android 16 pleads to Mr. Satan to take him near Gohan (throw him if he had to), for the sake of the world. Mr. Satan, complied, despite his fear and the Android's head landed near Gohan and put Videl down on the ground next to Android 16 and Gohan. Android 16 gives some advice and words of encouragement to Gohan, saying it was okay to fight sometimes to defend loved ones, and to protect the nature he loved. Perfect Cell, overhearing this, claimed that this was good advice and promptly crushed Android 16's head beneath his foot, as wires and parts scatter across the battlefield as Gohan watches in shock. Then, Cell turns around attention and looking at her with his evil smirk and pointed his finger at Videl as he's preparing to kill her with Frieza's Death Beam attack in front of Gohan.

"You're next! Little Girl! Just like your big brother did, Videl."
    — Cell with an evil smirk on his face and evil laughter to kill Videl

This is the breaking point for Gohan, and he finally snaps. This enrages Gohan to the very limits and pushed him to a new level, Super Saiyan 2, the Super Saiyan level ascended beyond a Super Saiyan (although it was not named at this point in the series). Perfect Cell was pleased when Gohan reached this form and rescued Videl, Jimmy and Krillin from two Cell Juniors, but Gohan's first action was mercilessly killing off the smaller Cell Jr.s, which he defeated in a single hit each.

    CellAfterGohansKamehameha

Cell after getting hit by Super Saiyan 2 Gohan's Standing Kamehameha

The already astounded Z Warriors, with the exception of Goku, were amazed as Gohan and Perfect Cell began to battle, with Gohan dominating the powerful Android. Even after Cell, to everyone's surprise and horror, powered up to maximum (a power deemed "unfathomable" by the Z Fighters) and punched Gohan hard in the face, Gohan was barely phased at all. With just two punches, Gohan almost incapacitated Cell completely. Perfect Cell knew he was no match against Gohan.

Gohan then began dodging all his attacks, taunting him, and overpowering even his strongest Kamehameha at point blank range. This almost destroyed Cell, but Gohan decided to let Cell suffer for a while, which made Goku order Gohan to kill Cell. But it was too late. Cell regenerated using Piccolo's Cells. Making the same mistake Future Trunks made earlier, he began a USS-like transformation that reduced his speed drastically, making him unable to hit Gohan. After Gohan had had enough of dodging Cell's punches, he kicked Cell in the face and then in the stomach. The kick to the stomach was hard enough to make Cell regurgitate Android 18, which made him go back to his Semi-Perfect form.

    Power Weighted Perfect Cell[]

Cell takes this buff form a second time, when he loses his temper against Gohan

"Power Weighted Perfect Cell" (パワー重視 完全体セル, Pawa Juuji Kanzentai Seru) is a transformation of Perfect Cell. It makes its debut in "The Cell Games", the 165th episode of Dragon Ball Z (150th in the 276-episode version), which premiered on November 18, 1992. It makes its first manga appearance in "Trunks Surpasses His Father", the 386th chapter of the Dragon Ball manga, issued on December 26, 1992.

    Power Weighted Cell Zenkai Royale

Power Weighted Perfect Cell in Zenkai Battle Royale

Cell takes this form for his meteor attack in Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension. He is fully playable in this form in Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Battlers, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, Dragon Ball Heroes, and Dragon Ball: Zenkai Battle Royale. The form also makes a story mode only appearance in the final battle of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, where Gohan must defeat him, despite the fact he should actually be in his Super Perfect form.

    History[]

After defeating Future Trunks in his Ultra Super Saiyan transformation, Perfect Cell assumes this buffed state to demonstrate the mistake Future Trunks made increasing his muscle mass, without balancing his speed as well. This otherwise unnamed form is again taken by Cell after he loses his temper with a Super Saiyan 2 Gohan. Trunks notes this during the Cell Games, saying "it's making the same mistake he mocked me for!" Though his raw strength in this state dwarfs that of most of the Z Fighters, Gohan was still able to effortlessly cripple him in a single heavy kick to the stomach (a heavy hit to the head in the manga), causing him to regurgitate Android 18 and revert to his Semi-Perfect form. Afterwards, Cell realizes that he can never win at this rate, and blows himself up in an effort to take Gohan and the Earth down with him, but Goku sacrifices himself to stop this from happening along with Shaun, Danielle and Zesmond. Little did anyone know, Cell would survive the explosion and return safely to Earth using Goku's own Instant Transmission technique, stronger than ever. This form is never seen afterwards.

    Power[]

Despite ceasing to use this transformation after due to its obvious impairments, his buff stage is considered second only to Cell's Super Perfect form. It is uncertain if Cell is capable of using any techniques unseen in previous transformations, as he only appears buffed for brief periods of time. Nonetheless, Power Weighted Perfect Cell is still markedly outclassed by Gohan in his Super Saiyan 2 transformation. In the anime dub, Future Trunks implies that Power Weighted Cell was stronger than Super Saiyan 2 Gohan in terms of brute strength, but manga content suggests otherwise, as Gohan crippled Cell with a single kick to the stomach, and made him regurgitate Android 18.

    Super Perfect Cell[]

    CellPerfectReturnsNV

    Super Perfect Cell

Super Perfect Cell (超完全体セル, Cho Kanzentai Seru) is a version of Cell's perfect form after he receives a Zenkai from his recovery after a botched self destruction that took the lives of Goku, King Kai, Bubbles and Gregory. Despite Cell's loss of Android 18 (and after he self-destructed, Android 17), his cells retained the memory of his perfect form, which made it possible for him to regenerate back into that form. This form was officially named in the video games.

    Appearance[]

In his most powerful state, Cell's appearance remains the same. Nonetheless, his power increases exponentially. His aura crackles with surges of blue electricity, much like a Super Saiyan 2. This huge influx of power causes his already-overinflated ego to increase dramatically. He becomes notably more deranged, frequently shouting and exhibiting bizarre facial ticks at random intervals (although this may be largely due to his rage over being humiliated by Gohan). In addition, the intro narration for Cell Returns has the narrator referring to Cell as a "demented demon", implying that Cell had become insane when he returned.

    History[]

Even after self-destructing at King Kai's planet, one single cell survives the explosion due to the fact that his design provided for such. Using the regenerative abilities he inherited from Piccolo, Cell is able to completely recover. His cells also retain a memory of his perfect form, allowing him to regenerate into that form again despite his loss of both the Androids at this point (Android 17 was also killed in the explosion of Cell's semi-perfect body). Due to his Saiyan trait of extreme power increase after healing from injury, he becomes much stronger than he previously was in his perfect form, even at full power or when buffed up. Apparently, Cell himself was previously unaware of this ability, as he is shocked that he is still alive. Only then does he fully grasp what Dr. Gero meant by the perfect being. Before Gohan could do anything to him, Cell grabbed Videl and restrained her in his grips.

"Coward. Maybe if I will kill your sweet Videl! If I am going to die, then I am going to take your innocent girlfriend with me! Well, aren't you gonna do anything or should I kill her? Maybe I'll absorb her in front of you, Jimmy and her father...She smells delicious and sweet."

Super Perfect Cell being obliterated by Gohan's Kamehameha

Using Instant Transmission (acquired from Goku), Cell returns to Earth, kills Future Trunks with the Full Power Death Beam, and explains how he survived. Enraged, Vegeta blindly rushes at him in his Super Saiyan form, but is slapped aside. Cell attempts to kill Vegeta with a ki blast, but Gohan intercepts Cell's attack. Due to the sheer power of the attack and the fact that he was unable to actually defend against it, Gohan is left without the use of his left arm and his ki supply reduced to less than half. Cell then wickedly reveals that he will destroy the Earth and then use the Instant Transmission to teleport to various planets destroying each one in the process. The whole situation crushes Gohan's will to fight, convincing him he no longer has the power to defeat Cell. Kayla was able distracted Cell at bay with abilities long enough to Gohan going to saved Videl and hitting him with his Kamehameha.

Gohan appears behind Cell, he's kicks Cell in the face, in time he need to rescue Videl from Super Perfect Cell. Gohan ran away to the other side of the platform, holding Videl in one arm, flying away from him, and tell her run to her father and others behind the rocks. Cell was felted that Videl insulated him by calling him a loser and she's sticking her tongue at him before his death.

However, Gohan is told by Goku that his ki issue is just in his mind, and that he can destroy Cell. Gohan desperately engages Cell in a Kamehameha wave struggle at the behest of the late Goku. At this point, the manga and anime take two slightly different approaches on the clash and, consequently, Super Perfect Cell's power. In the anime, Cell gains the upper hand several times, nearly overwhelming Gohan nonchalantly. The other fighters try to distract Cell by attacking him, but failing as Cell simply flares his aura and knocks them all back. As he is about to finish off Gohan, Vegeta distracts Cell with a surprise blast to the side of his head, being much stronger than the others. Vegeta's blast does what the others failed to do. In the manga, while Cell still gained the upper hand. The only one to get involved was Vegeta, and he only needed to do this once. Regardless of the story, however, Gohan caught Cell momentarily off guard thanks to Vegeta, allowing Gohan to draw out all of his power to obliterate Cell completely, and the battle is finally over.

In the manga, it is suggested that this form was much more powerful than Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, as after badly hurting Gohan with a blast intended to kill Vegeta, he states "enough playing around" implying he did not put much power into the blast. The video game Dragon Ball Z: Budokai suggests otherwise since in the story mode Gohan and Cell have a fair fight at first. In the cut-scene after the battle Cell seems to be angry, implying that Gohan still has the advantage.

    Cell after absorbing Goku[]

    CellGokuHellGT03

    Cell absorbing Goku

In GT, while Cell and Frieza were fighting Goku in Hell, Cell actually absorbed Goku for a brief while, gaining all of his power (even the power of his Super Saiyan 4 state). His appearance actually did change, becoming much more buff and being surrounded by electricity, before Goku crawled out of Cell.

    Majin Cell[]

    DBZ2V003

    Majin Cell and Majin Frieza

Cell appears in this form in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 and Dragon Ball Z 2 V. In the story mode, he and Frieza are revived and turned into Majins by Babidi, and are once again beaten by Goku and the other Z Fighters. When Majin Buu kills Babidi, Cell and Frieza turn back to their old selves and do not remember anything of being controlled by Babidi, though they still continue to obstruct the good guys all the way to the ending chapter. Once beaten for the last time, they finally return to Hell. He appears the same as in his Perfect state except with an M on his forehead and black lining around his eyes like with Vegeta when under the trance.

    Cellin[]

Main article: Cellin Cellin is the product of Cell absorbing Krillin in a what-if scenario in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai.

    Power and Special Abilities[]

    Perfect Cell pummels Goku

Cell has acid inside his body that is shown when he regenerates his tail while in his first form.[1] He has the ability to revert his form (demonstrated when he reverted to an egg and potentially by his evolving body). It is likely that Cell's asexual reproductive capability in spawning the Cell Jr's is taken from Piccolo's Namekian physiology.

Along with Piccolo's regeneration, he has Frieza's ability to survive any injury; after Cell achieves his Super Perfect Form due to his brush with death when he self destructed, he explains that this is because each individual cell in his body has a life-force of their own. Also, his Saiyan cells make him stronger from every near-death injury he survives, thanks to the Saiyan's Zenkai.

Cell has the techniques of those whose cells make up his body from the time when the samples were taken from them. The likes of Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta had their cells taken during Vegeta's invasion of Earth, while Frieza and King Cold had theirs taken when they invaded during the Trunks Saga later.

    All forms[]

    • Power up – The ability to increase and suppress his power level.
    • Ki Sense – The ability to sense others' power levels.
    • Absorption – Cell has two methods of absorption, both using his tail: he can absorb other beings' energy in order to gain all of the strength of the person (Drain Life Cell), or absorb other beings whole into his body in order to transform. In the second method of absorption, made for people who he wants every bit of strength from, Cell opens up the pointy end of his stinger and it becomes a shape of a wide funnel, Cell brings the "mouth" of the funnel down on the person, and then they will sucked through Cell's tail into his body, with the person held unconscious in Cell's body. This method was made for Android 17 and 18, who, due to their powers not being organic, or possibly due their ability to dodge Cell's stinger, they had to be absorbed whole. Even though Cell's tail retracted after becoming Perfect Cell, it is shown that Cell can still bring his stinger out and absorb other people using this technique. The tail can also be used for strangulation, which he had used on the Future Trunks from his timeline and on Android 16 in the present timeline, or to give birth to the Cell Juniors.
    CellsBody

The inside of Cell's body, as exposed by Vegeta's devastating Final Flash

    • Zenkai – From his Saiyan cells, Cell has the ability to become more powerful after recovering from severe injuries. He also takes on many personality traits that are true to Saiyans, like the desire to fight and test his power. Even though Cell is not categorized as a Super Saiyan, his aura perfectly mimics that of a Super Saiyan; this is connected to his Saiyan heritage. This ability, combined with his regeneration power, makes him near invincible, and can only be defeated if his entire body (right down to the cell) is completely destroyed, otherwise he will just come back, stronger than ever.
    • Flight – The ability to fly, taken from any of the cell samples.
    • Telekinesis – Cell can lift objects of large proportionate sizes into the air with his mind and controlling the use of his hand(s). Likely taken from Frieza.
    • Super Explosive Wave – Used to attack people in a city in his timeline, as seen in a flashback in the episode "Ghosts from Tomorrow". He uses a variation of this technique, called Perfect Barrier, in his Perfect form.
    • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
    CellFirstKamehameha

Cell performing his first Kamehameha, leaving Piccolo in shock

    • Kamehameha – A blue-colored, powerful ki wave attack and trademark technique of the Dragon Ball series. Taken from Goku.
    • Regeneration – The Namekian ability to regenerate damage to the body. Cell can regenerate only if the core inside his head is not damaged. Taken from Piccolo.
    • Solar Flare – An extremely bright light which can temporarily blind opponents in near proximity. Taken from Tien.
    • Afterimage Strike – The ability to move extremely fast over short distances, leaving an image behind. Taken from Goku, never used in the manga.
    • Special Beam Cannon – An energy beam that can drill through opponents. Taken from Piccolo. Only used in anime-filler and video games.
    • Kiai – Used to end his Fear Me! technique. Also used in the Butōden series and Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Cybernetic Radar – A High Speed Rush attack finished with a Kiai. Used in Budokai series.
    • Negative Power Rain – The name of the Renzoku Energy Dan technique he uses in the Butōden series and Budokai series.
    • Lasso – Cell punches his opponent, then he picks them up by the leg and spins them around his head, and finally he throws him into the ground. This throw attack is one of the first abilities Cell acquires in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 1 and Budokai 2.
    • Ultimate Attack – Cell kicks the opponent up in the air, where he kicks them more and punches them down again, and finally Cell kicks his opponent in the back when he is down. Used in the Budokai series.
    • Energy Field – A protective barrier used notably used Semi-Perfect Cell in order to completely absorb Android 18 without interference. This technique is used by Cell in all his forms in the Budokai series.

    Imperfect Cell[]

    CellAbsorbingPiccolo

    Imperfect Cell absorbing Piccolo's energy

    • Eye Lasers – Cell used this technique against Earth's Military while he was fighting Piccolo in Gingertown.
    • Bio Impact – A rush attack used against Android 16.
    • See Ya! – The technique he used to defeat Piccolo on the islands. It is also used by Perfect Cell in video games.
    • Prelude to Perfect Form – A power up Cell is able to use after absorbing several humans.

    Semi-Perfect Cell[]

    • Big Bang Crash – A powerful, blazing red-colored version of Vegeta's Big Bang Attack. Semi-Perfect Cell uses this technique when he destroyed whole islands with it to flush out Android 18. Taken from Vegeta, Cell can also fires it from the mouth or fires several Big Bang Crashes in a row. It was named in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
    • Galick Gun – A purple-colored, powerful energy blast taken from Vegeta. Never used in the manga.
    CellsBarrier

Semi-Perfect Cell using an Energy Field to achieve his perfect form

    • Unforgivable! – Like all other androids, Cell can initiate a self-destruction. Cell, however, has a special technique to do so, rather than just a device. When Cell uses it, he swells up like a giant balloon and begins a 1 minute countdown, which when it ends, he will explode with enough power to engulf an entire planet. Should he be attacked before the countdown ends, he will explode instantly. Once activated, this technique cannot be stopped, even by himself.
    • Chain Destructo Disk – One of Semi-Perfect Cell's special techniques in the Nintendo DS game Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2. Originally used by Krillin.
    • Light Grenade – One of Semi-Perfect Cell's special techniques in Supersonic Warriors 2. Originally used by Piccolo.
    • Twin Drain – A team attack performed by Dr. Gero and Semi-Perfect Cell in Supersonic Warriors 2.
    • Vocal Mimicry and Amplification – Semi-Perfect Cell displayed the ability to mimic Android 17's voice and amplify his own so it could be heard for miles.

    Perfect Cell/Super Perfect Cell[]

    CellAttackingGoku

Cell fires the Ultimate Blitz at Goku

    • Ultimate Blitz – The one handed energy blast he was about to use to kill Future Trunks before he spares him for announcing the Cell Games. Named in Supersonic Warriors 2.
    • Ultimate Wave – Cell shoots a large Ki Blast at his opponent which slams him into the ground, and creates a shock wave that also damages the enemy. Used in Supersonic Warriors 2.
    • Bang Beam – The user puts his hand out with the index finger pointing forward and thumb raised and shoots a red blast. Cell used it by flicking his finger. Taken from Vegeta and Frieza.
    • Battering Ram – The flying headbutt he used against Goku. Named in the Butōden series.
    • Rockslide Tackle – A dashing slide kick, followed by a side kick. One of his special attacks in the Butōden series, and his dashing strike in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
    • Perfect Combination – Cell delivers a barrage of punches and kicks to the opponent before slapping them away and elbowing them into the ground. It is named in Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and is one of Cell's Blast 2 attacks in his Super Perfect form.
    • Full Power Rush – Cell pummels his opponent with a long melee combo (25 hits, actually), grabs him, and performs the See Ya! technique. It is his Ultimate K.O. in Supersonic Warriors 2.
    • Fear Me! – A rush attack finished with a kiai. Used by Cell during the fight with Gohan.
    • Time to Die – A rush attack Cell used in his Super Perfect form against Vegeta.
    • Perfect Barrier – An impenetrable shield Cell places around himself to protect him from attacks, as seen when he transforms between his Semi-Perfect and Perfect forms after absorbing Android 18. It was most likely taken from Android 17 after Cell absorbed him, though his special barrier could be a technique programmed directly by Dr. Gero. It can also cause damage to anyone unfortunate enough to collide with it. The name comes from the Budokai Tenkaichi series, where it is the ultimate move of his Perfect form.
    CellPerfectKameNV

Super Perfect Cell prepares his Solar Kamehameha

    • Death Beam – A laser-like projectile which travels very quickly. Taken from Frieza.
      • Barrage Death Beam – A rapid-fire version of the Death Beam. He used it against Gohan.
      • Full Power Death Beam – A full powered version of the Death Beam, with a much bigger radius. He uses this attack to kill Future Trunks.
    • Instant Transmission – The ability to instantly teleport virtually anywhere (by homing in on a ki signature). Taken from Goku after Cell's self destruction.
    • Super Kamehameha – An upgraded version of the Kamehameha used by Perfect Cell.
    • Earth-Destroying Kamehameha – A much more powerful version of the Super Kamehameha. Used in a desperate attempt to destroy the Earth against Super Saiyan 2 Gohan. However, Gohan counter-attacked with the Standing Kamehameha.
    • Solar Kamehameha – Super Perfect Cell's Ultimate and Final attack. Cell stores a massive amount of energy and fires it in the form of a giant Kamehameha that, which he states himself, has enough power to destroy the entire solar system.[2] It was created and used by Super Perfect Cell as a final bid to destroy Gohan, but was countered by the Father-Son Kamehameha. Its name comes from Budokai Tenkaichi 3, where it is Super Perfect Cell's Ultimate Blast technique.
    • Warp Kamehameha – Cell's ultimate technique in Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai. When using it, he utters the words "Farewell... NOW!".
    • Cell's Spirit Bomb – Cell never uses the Spirit Bomb in the series, though he states that he can use it if he wished. This is likely a bluff, as one must be pure of heart to perform the attack according to King Kai, although being pure evil of heart may also be considered. This technique is Cell's ultimate attack in his Perfect Form in the Butōden series, Budokai series and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (while under his Super Perfect form).
    GokuSurroundedByCells

    Perfect Cell using the Multi-Form

    • Destructo Disk – An energy disk that can cut through an opponent. Taken from Krillin, never used in the manga.
      • Homing Destructo Disk – A variant of the Destructo Disk, this energy disk can be controlled by the creator to change direction. Taken from Frieza (Anime only).
    • Multi-Form – Used by Cell during the fight with Goku in the anime only, this technique is one of Tien's. The technique creates three fighting copies of the user with 1/4th of the user's power.
    • Tri-Beam – A blast of rectangle shaped energy. Taken from Tien (Anime only).
    • Hell Bazooka – A technique that Cell and Frieza developed together while in Hell. Both Cell and Frieza begin to glow, then a yellow ki emits from both of their bodies, which then envelops their opponent, trapping him/her in an inescapable ki orb. Then both the users throws the orb prison down into the deepest part of Hell, with the prisoner in it. Named Almighty Light Cage in the FUNimation Dub.
    Super17saga13

    Frieza and Cell attack Goku

    • Absolute Evil – A team attack used by Cell and Frieza in Supersonic Warriors 2.

    • Climbing Attack – A jumping knee strike used in the Butōden series.
    • Volleyball Kick-Spike – Perfect Cell's meteor attack in Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 2. Cell grabs his opponent, throws them skyward, then spikes them into the ground with a kick.
    • Meteo Self-Destruct – Perfect Cell's meteor attack in Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22.
    • Hell Needle – Cell fires three blasts diagonally to the left and right of him, preventing opponents to dash out of his way. Used in Super Dragon Ball Z.
    • Interrupter – Cell sidesteps to either side, firing two to four needle shots to the opponent as he goes. Used in Super Dragon Ball Z.

    Video Game Appearances[]

    Cell perfect

Super Perfect Cell as he appears in Budokai Tenkaichi 3

Cell has made an impact in many Dragon Ball Z video games, mostly as a boss or high-end playable character. Though sometimes featured in only his Perfect Form, the more recent games in the Budokai series see Cell in his Imperfect, Semi-Perfect, and Super Perfect (after exploding and then gaining a power boost due to his Saiyan cells) states as well. In addition, in the original Budokai game his bulky form from when he battled Gohan was accessible as a boss fight only.

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai he transforms into a what-if in his dreams where seen he absorbs Krillin instead of 18 and turns into Cellin (who looks like a fusion between a Cell Jr. and Krillin). Although Cell's arc is not the final in the series, the buck often stops there in many games, including Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game, Dragon Ball Z: Sagas, the first Budokai, and Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit.

    Cell kuririn 2

    Cell after he absorbed Krillin

In the game, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2, Cell and Frieza can be put under Babidi's influence like Vegeta or Dabura, becoming Majins. Later Cell can also be absorbed by Super Buu.

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Cell makes an appearance along side Frieza in the Fusion Reborn movie saga, even though he was absent in the movie itself. In the Arcade Mode of Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, Cell is the only evil character to get his wish fulfilled (Broly does not count because he did not have a real "wish", Frieza also does not count due to the "wish" being a misunderstanding on Shenron's part).

List of characters killed by Cell[]

    • Alternate Future Trunks – Killed by Cell in another alternate timeline. Cell strangled him with his tail so he could steal his Time Machine.
    • Humans – Thousands of people are killed when Cell blows up inhabited islands in search of Android 18 and many others were killed through absorption. He annihilated a quarter of a city when making his global broadcast about the Cell Games. He also killed many military soldiers in his first battle with Piccolo, and during the ten-day waiting period of the Cell Games. Though, they were later revived with the Dragon Balls.
    • Richest man in Gingertown – Killed through absorption in front of Piccolo. He was revived with the Dragon Balls.
    • ZTV reporter – Killed by Perfect Cell's Bang Beam.
    • Goku – Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet. He was later revived when Elder Kai gave him his life 7 years later.
    • Shaun – Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet. He was later revived when Elder Kai gave him his life 7 years later.
    • Danielle - Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet. She was later revived when she's got wished back alongside with everybody on the Lookout with the Namekian Dragon Balls 7 years later.
    • Zesmond - Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet. He was later revived when he got wished back along with everybody on the Lookout with the Namekian Dragon Balls 7 years later.
    • King Kai – Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet.
    • Bubbles – Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet.
    • Gregory – Killed when Cell self-destructed, after Goku took him to King Kai's planet.
    • Shaun - Killed inside of the Spencer House by Imperfect Cell's Frieza's Death beam through the heart. He was later revived when Elder Kai gave him his life 7 years later.
    • Android 17 – Killed when Cell self destructed, as he was still inside Cell at the time. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls.
    • Future Trunks – Killed by Cell with a beam through the chest. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls.

    Trivia[]

    All forms[]

    • Although Cell comes from an alternate timeline, he is not referred to as "Future Cell", due to the fact that the main timeline's Cell never made a significant appearance (only one brief appearance in his larval state before getting blown up by Krillin and Future Trunks).
    • Cell was unleashed in the Age 791 in his timeline and died in Age 767 in the main timeline (24 years before his alternate self would be unleashed into the world).
    • Cell very much resembles an insect, both in appearances and in the way he goes through different stages of metamorphosis.
    • All four forms of Cell had some sort of characteristic of the Z Fighters who challenged him in his personality. Imperfect Cell was sneaky and calculating like Piccolo, Semi-Perfect Cell was vain and arrogant like Vegeta, Perfect Cell was laid back and only wanted to fight powerful opponents like Goku, and Super Perfect Cell was hotheaded and cocky like Super Saiyan 2 Gohan.
    • Cell repeats two fatal mistakes that were made by another Z Fighter that was fighting him. Cell tricked Vegeta into letting him become complete so he could see his true power, and later Cell wanted to see Gohan's hidden power, which resulted in his death. Like Future Trunks, Cell powered up to his maximum and beefed up, which made him stronger but slowed him down so that he could not land a single hit on Gohan. This leads to him being kicked in the stomach and regurgitating Android 18, causing him to revert to his Semi-Perfect form.
    • Technically speaking, Cell has been killed three times. He was killed by SSJ2 Gohan in the main timeline, his other alternate timeline self was killed by Future Trunks and his main timeline self was killed by Krillin and Future Trunks in infancy.
    • Cell killed Future Trunks twice, first in his Imperfect form when he stole Trunks' Time Machine, and second when he killed him as Super Perfect Cell. Ironically enough, Trunks also killed Cell twice, first alongside Krillin while Cell was in his larval form, and second in his own time while Cell was in his Imperfect Form.
    • In the Budokai games, even if Cell has reached his Semi-Perfect, Perfect, and Super Perfect forms, whenever he receives a powerful hit and screams in pain, he sounds just like Imperfect Cell. This mistake continued on into the Budokai Tenkaichi series as well, as take-damage voice cuts were never recorded for those forms.
    • Despite not being the last villain in the anime, Cell is the final boss in a few Dragon Ball Z games released after the Majin Buu Saga, such as Budokai 1, DBZ: Sagas, Super Dragon Ball Z, Harukanaru Densetsu, and Burst Limit.
    • In all of Cell's 'adult' forms, there is one area of his body that never changes, the black diamond area in the center of his chest.

    Imperfect Cell[]

    • His mouth in this form resembles that of an Arlian, except that his mouth opens when he talks.
    • His face in the Imperfect Form resembles the face of the first core form of Lavos from Chrono Trigger (that game's characters were designed by Akira Toriyama).
    • In the Nintendo DS game Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, the enemies Sandman, Yorgan, and Failed Experiment are recolored versions of Imperfect Cell.

    Semi-Perfect Cell[]

    • Though his Semi-Perfect form is in between his Imperfect and Perfect/Super Perfect forms, the latter three of which all have wings, his Semi-Perfect form does not possess wings.

    Perfect Cell/Super Perfect Cell[]

    • In the manga and Japanese anime, there is a plot hole with regards to how Cell achieved this state. According to Cell, an organ inside his head allows him to regenerate, so long as that organ is not destroyed. Goku had previously destroyed Cell's entire upper body, head included, which should have prevented the evil android from regenerating. This plot hole is not present in FUNimation's English dub of the anime, where Cell stated that "every cell in his body has a life of its own", and that one survived, which allowed him to regenerate.
